The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 has already begun as Chelsea have made their final preparations and are set to begin their journey in the newly inaugurated Club World, taking on LAFC tonight in matchday 1.
Chelsea had announced their squad list and the set of players who have travelled to the USA for the prestigious tournament, where Enzo Maresca’s decision to leave out several big names is grabbing the headlines as fans expect a major turnover at Stamford Bridge in the ongoing summer.
As per the official squad list, the West Londoners have left out several big names, including Premier League veteran Raheem Sterling, former first-team superstar Ben Chilwell, former Strasbourg loanee Djorde Petrovic, defender Axel Disasi, and even the recently signed Joao Felix, who are all now heavily tipped for a move away from the Bridge this summer.
What next for Chelsea and their “worn-out” stars?
The decisions regarding team selection have created a massive wave in the football community, as many fans believe some of these outcasts should get at least an opportunity to prove their worth once again.
Among all of these incidents, Chelsea fans believe that the management have made a big mistake by continuously overlooking the potential of Djorde Petrovic, who was once seen as a potential first-choice keeper and has now been left out of the squad completely.
Despite the Blues facing a problem with Robert Sanchez, who is reportedly deemed “not worthy enough” by Maresca and his coaching staff to secure a permanent GK spot, Petrovic’s exclusion indicates that a summer departure for him now seems inevitable.
On the other hand, aging veterans like Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, who appear to be way past their best days, are appearing to be heading towards a definite exit from Chelsea in the ongoing summer transfer window.
For young talents like Joao Felix and Axel Disasi as well, the journey at Chelsea seems to be coming to a premature end, with the club’s latest signings causing them to drastically fall down the ranks in the current squad.
As reported by various sources, Serie A giants Juventus are looking to sign Axel Disasi on a permanent move, whereas Joao Felix has attracted interest from Ligue 1 and Serie A; however, no official approach has yet been made for the two.
