“They don't deserve to wear the shirt”: Wayne Rooney slams Manchester United players amid growing crisis inside the dressing room

Wayne Rooney has delivered yet another furious and brutal assessment of Manchester United’s struggling squad, accusing the players of lacking commitment, emotion and the standards expected at Old Trafford to succeed.
His outburst followed United’s humiliating 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday at home, a result that added huge pressure on manager Michael Carrick and deepened concerns about the club’s direction this season.
Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney questioned the players’ work rate and suggested that several were failing to understand the responsibility that comes with representing the club.
Him being the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, he said he wanted to confront the squad directly and remind them of the sacrifices required with wearing the shirt.
He argued that the players were not working hard enough for one another and appeared emotionally detached from the crest with no passion.
"The players haven't got a leg to stand on. What's not fair is the performances they are giving," said Rooney. (sic)
"I looked at the fans; you could see the pain and anger in their faces when those players were walking around the football pitch. You see [Lisandro] Martinez when [Bournemouth winger] Rayan runs round him; they are not getting to the ball. It's so frustrating.” (sic)
He added, "I could score a goal, had the ability or whatever; at least I f------ ran and put myself about as a team. These players are not doing that.” (sic)
"I would love to go in that dressing room and say, 'What the f--- are you all doing? What type of performances do you think this is? Do you think you deserve to wear the shirt?' Put a f------ firework up their a---- because they are not doing anything.” (sic)
"We are seeing players who are numb, look like they have got no emotion, and look like they don't care. Some of them might care; some are good lads who are getting dragged down. It is so frustrating to watch.” (sic)
Rooney stated that the club is miles away from the level required to win the Premier League and challenge for the European trophies.
Rooney’s criticism comes amid growing tension between the dressing room and the coaching staff.
Captain Bruno Fernandes had questioned Carrick’s tactical approach following United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, which led to him getting benched against Bournemouth, while Lisandro Martínez had previously criticised the club’s hierarchy over its transfer strategy.
For United, the crisis now extends beyond results. Questions over tactics, recruitment, leadership and effort will always arise at a club that has struggled to recover its identity.
Rooney’s comments may be uncomfortable for the players, Como, but they reflect a growing demand for accountability. Unless the players respond on the pitch, the situation will only grow worse.
