Just last season, Estevao Willian looked like one of Chelsea’s most exciting prospects and the future of the Blues.

His sensational performances last season at Stamford Bridge, which included a memorable goal against Barcelona in the Champions League, suggested that the Brazilian teenager could become a big figure in the club’s attack this season under Xabi Alonso.

However, just months later, the 19-year-old finds himself struggling for opportunities under the Spanish boss.

The question is no longer how quickly Estevão can establish himself at Chelsea, but why he is barely getting the chances now when just months back he seemed to be the future.

The game time that he's got makes the situation difficult to ignore. Estevao has played just 172 minutes of first-team football across all competitions this season and has yet to start a Premier League game.

His only two starts have come in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup. He was left unused during Chelsea’s penalty-shootout defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup, and this was particularly frustrating, especially after Blues supporters had urged for him to be brought on.

Alonso has acknowledged that the youngster shouldn't worry about this situation and compete despite having limited opportunities.

The Chelsea manager insists that it is not an issue of attitude. He has tilted the reason towards the intensity and physical demands of English football, describing Estevao’s development as a process involving both the player and the coaching staff.

Alonso has also promised him more minutes as the season progresses and dismissed the possibility of a January loan, ruling out the possibility of his departure.

There are tactical reasons behind the lack of involvement for the Brazilians as well. In Xabi Alonso's system Pedro Neto has become a line option on the right, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers occupy the central zones.

Alonso's preferred wing combinations have left Estevao struggling to find a regular position. His limited minutes also come after a hamstring injury ended his previous season prematurely and ruled him out of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Therefore, returning to full fitness and adapting to a new manager's demands have become a challenge.

“Sure, he will play. The season is long, and there will be moments for everyone. He will have his games, his minutes. We are still early in the season, but he will be there,” said Alonso in the press conference speaking to the media after the loss to Liverpool. (sic)

However, the Chelsea management must handle this situation with utmost care, as if this turns into a prolonged situation, they risk losing a huge prospect from the club.

Estevao needs meaningful opportunities to at least continue his development at the club, and his performance last season shows that he can make a difference at the highest level.

The positive thing in this situation is that Alonso has been positive regarding the player, but eventually it must reflect to the player as well through game time.

The club has invested heavily in the youngster, and now they must ensure that the trust doesn't go in vain.
