Bayer Leverkusen’s star midfielder Florian Wirtz, who has been tipped for a big-money move in the summer, has informed the club of his next chosen destination for the coming years of his career, amidst links to Manchester City.
Wirtz has decided to snub Manchester City and is preferring a move to Leverkusen’s rivals, Bayern Munich, with reports from One Football even claiming that the negotiations between the 22-year-old and the Bavarian giants are expected to begin soon.
The news will surely come as a big blow to Pep Guardiola and co., who had Wirtz as a top target in their mega transfer plans for the summer, as they see the Leverkusen no. 10 as the ideal replacement for the departing Kevin De Bruyne.
Florian Wirtz chooses Bayern Munich over Manchester City and Real Madrid
As reported by One Football, Bayer Leverkusen had put a price tag of €150 million on their young talent earlier this season in order to let him go in case the right offer came in; however, later, they decided to reverse their decision, which also indicates how highly the former Bundesliga champions rate Florian Wirtz.
Confirming Bayern’s strong interest in Wirtz during his latest interview, Leverkusen’s CEO Fernando Carro said, “However, transfer negotiations with Bayern are likely to pick up speed soon. Florian Wirtz is already the record champions’ top transfer target for this summer.” (sic)
He further talked about why Wirtz decided to snub Manchester City and Real Madrid, who had also kept tabs on Wirtz, stating, “Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City… have reportedly not been a serious option for the Wirtz family for some time.” (sic)
It seems like just a matter of time before Wirtz’s move to Bayern Munich gets done, with negotiations set to take place in the coming days.
The 22-year-old’s move to Bayern can take him to exceptional heights, where his magical talent will combine with the likes of superstars such as Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Michael Olise and even his fellow countryman, Jamal Musiala.
On the other hand, a move to Manchester City would have also been a great option for Wirtz, as City aimed to bring him in as De Bruyne’s replacement, which would have given him guaranteed regular minutes, despite the competition in the current City squad.
An ample amount of time under the guidance of a mastermind like Pep Guardiola surely seems like a dream for every budding talent in world football, with the Spaniard turning many great talents into world-class players, which could have been an ideal situation for Wirtz as well, but the German has decided to take a different route.
