Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 21-year-old chapter with Argentina.

The 39-year-old announced his decision on Monday, barely over a month after Argentina's narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Messi's final appearance for La Albiceleste came in that World Cup final, as his international career ended without a fairytale ending.

Nevertheless, he leaves behind a legacy only a few have achieved with Argentina, and only a few would be able to come close to it in the future.

Messi hangs up his boots as Argentina's most capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, with 207 appearances and 125 goals.

He made his debut for the national team against Hungary in 2005 and then went on to represent the Argentine side at 6 World Cups, becoming one of the most influential figures in the history of the national team.

However, for much of his early international career, success remained out of his reach. Messi reached the 2014 World Cup final with Argentina but lost to Germany and went on to lose consecutive Copa America final losses to Chile, which even prompted him to briefly retire from the national team in 2016.

He eventually returned, and the breakthrough finally arrived in 2021 at the 2021 Copa America in Brazil.

Argentina defeated Brazil in the final at the Maracana, where Messi lifted his first-ever international trophy.

This moment released years of pressure from his shoulders. A year later he lifted the ultimate prize. Messi led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar, scoring 7 goals in the tournament and single-handedly carrying Argentina in the tournament.

Messi's international success didn't stop there; he led La Albiceleste to retain their 2024 Copa America title, defeating Colombia in the final.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Messi led Argentina to back-to-back World Cup finals, giving him three appearances across his career, which is a massive feat.

Messi finished the tournament with 8 goals and added yet another memorable chapter in his glorious career.

Messi acknowledged that leaving Argentina was painful, but he understood that the time had come.

He has expressed his confidence in the younger generation, which is now ready to take over.
