Casemiro has dubbed Lionel Messi the "god of football" and revealed that he joined Inter Miami to help the 39-year-old win more trophies in his already illustrious career.
Casemiro has spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and he has now shared the pitch with both of the game's icons. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder signed a free agent contract with Miami last week that will run through the 2027 MLS sprint season, with an option to extend until 2029.
The 34-year-old revealed that he had offers from a number of clubs after leaving Manchester United, but the prospect of playing alongside Messi was the most appealing to him.
"For me, without a doubt, I am coming only to play with the best player of all time. I want to enjoy it; I want to help him to keep winning because he is a winner. Another player is joining who wants to win, who wants to compete,” said Casemiro. (sic)
He further added, “I am where I want to be in MLS. I left United as a free agent. I had options in Italy and other teams in different places, but I am where I want to be. I want to enjoy being with him, helping him win and making him bigger. He's one of, if not the god of, football, and I want to help.” (sic)
Since Messi's arrival, Inter Miami has become one of the most successful clubs in the MLS, winning the 2023 League Cup, the 2024 Supporters Shield, and the 2025 MLS Cup.
The Argentine legend has elevated Miami's appeal to players, attracting legends such as Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets. Casemiro has joined the ranks of this distinguished group of legends.
The Brazilian will replace Busquets in midfield, who announced his retirement last season, and he possesses qualities that are ideal for the team. He demonstrates defensive abilities, leadership, and experience in leading a top-tier team's midfield.
He played an important role for Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite being eliminated by Norway in the Round of 16.
Casemiro spent nine seasons with Real Madrid, where Messi's Barcelona were their main rivals. The 34-year-old admitted that Messi treated him harshly during his time at Madrid, and he has wished to play alongside the Argentine ever since.
"The amount of problems Messi gave me – of course I dreamed of playing with him," Casemiro said. (sic)
He added, "I always wanted to play with the best. I could never stop him; I always needed help from my teammates. I am very happy that I am now with him, and I want to keep winning with him.” (sic)
This move reflects Inter Miami's growth strategy under David Beckham. They have not only attracted big names, but also players who have won before and can improve the squad's mentality.
Casemiro fits the profile perfectly, and Messi values the addition of an experienced teammate to replace Busquets' experience. The Brazilian faces high expectations, but he will need time to adjust.
MLS presents a completely different tactical and physical challenge than European football. However, Casemiro's experience should be sufficient to establish his presence at the club.
