Argentina's title defence is still alive, but only after debutants Cape Verde tested their mettle in a World Cup classic. Lionel Scaloni's team had to work hard against a fearless and brave Cape Verde side before securing a nail-biting 3-2 victory in extra time in one of the World Cup's most entertaining matches.
While Lionel Messi made history by becoming the first player to score 20 World Cup goals, the night belonged to the Africans, who ended their remarkable fairytale run with a performance that earned the football world's respect and admiration.
Cape Verde, ranked 67th, is a nation that few people were aware of prior to the World Cup. With a population of less than 500,000, no one expected them to make it to the World Cup knockout stages and put pressure on the defending champions and the world's top-ranked team.
An unbeaten group stage campaign that included draws against top teams Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia demonstrated that they were more than just another random underdog team.
The Blue Sharks, led by 40-year-old veteran custodian Vozinha, had already outperformed expectations before taking the pitch in Miami to face Messi and co. Argentina dominated possession but had to work hard until Lisandro MartĆnez made a visionary pass to Lionel Messi, who timed his run perfectly and slotted past Vozinha.
This was Messi's 20th World Cup goal, extending his record as the tournament's all-time leading scorer and putting him firmly in contention for the Golden Boot.
While many expected Cape Verde to crumble after the first goal, the African team refused to give up and defended bravely and confidently until the halftime whistle. Their perseverance paid off when Cape Verde caught Argentina off guard in midfield, allowing Deroy Duarte to equalise and stun the champions for the first time.
Scaloni's team continued to launch wave after wave of attacks, but Vozinha's heroics, who made save after save, frustrated Argentina and forced the game into overtime.
Argentina regained the lead when Lisandro Martinez fired a powerful shot from close range. Many thought the game was over, but Cape Verde refused to give up. Full-back Sidny Lopes Cabral scored the best goal of the World Cup so far, a potential PuskƔs contender, to make it 2-2 on the night.
This goal silenced the stadium, which was mostly packed with Argentines, while the Cape Verde players hurled at their fans and celebrated ecstatically. Penalties seemed unavoidable following that goal, as momentum had shifted completely in favour of the debutants.
However, there was one more twist in this incredible football game that had yet to be revealed. Argentina's decisive moment came in the 111th minute, when Lionel Messi's cross from the corner met Cristian Romero's header, which took a heavy deflection off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges and crept past Vozinha into the net.
It was a cruel way to end the game after such a valiant effort by the Cape Verdeans, but it was a huge relief for Argentina, who nearly saw their World Cup campaign end at the hands of a country no one had heard of prior to the tournament.
After the game, both Lionel Messi and Lionel Scaloni praised Cape Verde's performance while acknowledging that they had been made to suffer, stating that rankings mean nothing and that there are no easy games in the World Cup.
The Argentine manager praised his players for not crumbling under pressure and for their incredible mental fortitude in finding the winner when penalties seemed almost inevitable. Argentina will now face Egypt in the Round of 16, and their hopes of defending the title are still alive.
For Cape Verde, this result must not overshadow their achievements. In their first World Cup appearance, they became the smallest nation to advance to the knockout rounds, going undefeated throughout the group stage and nearly forcing Argentina to a shootout.
They may not have won any games at the World Cup, but they will leave the United States having won the hearts of the world. Cape Verde's fairytale story will live on in the sport as one of the greatest underdog stories, as they arrived on stage as unknowns and left as heroes, reminding us that courage and belief can push the best team in the world to the brink of disaster.
