Belgium appeared destined to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Senegal in the Round of 32, until the Red Devils staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in World Cup history, knocking Senegal out and advancing to the Round of 16.

After trailing the African giants by two goals with only five minutes remaining, Rudi Garcia's side rallied, scoring three goals in extra time, led by captain Youri Tielemans.

Senegal appeared to have complete control of the game until the final 85 minutes. The Teranga Lions played with incredible confidence, overwhelming Belgium with their intensity, and taking a well-deserved two-goal lead thanks to Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr.

They were rock solid at the back and lethal in transition, making Belgium look average, and an upset seemed inevitable as the clock approached full time.Ā

Belgium appeared to be out of ideas up front, and they performed poorly defensively. The level of frustration was so high that skipper Youri Tielemans and forward Leandro Trossard got into a heated exchange during the second hydration break.

Rudi Garcia surprised many by benching Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne in favour of Romelu Lukaku and Lukebakio. However, Belgium's all-time leading scorer had other ideas.

Lukaku sparked the Red Devils' comeback in the 86th minute, scoring a tap-in from close range to pull one back. It appeared that Rudi Garcia's side would be unable to find a way back into the game, but Lukaku did so with seconds remaining. With this goal, the momentum shifted dramatically, and Senegal began to defend nervously while Belgium pushed on.

Just three minutes later, Trossard delivered a tempting cross into the box, and Tielemans rose highest to head it past the custodian, who should have done better from his position, capping an incredible comeback.

Senegal dominated for the majority of the game, but knockout games are always decided by key moments, and Belgium delivered those moments to complete the comeback. Extra time added to the drama of the game, as both sides pushed for a winner.

The African giants created the majority of the opportunities but failed to convert any of them, which eventually came back to haunt them in the game. Penalties seemed unavoidable, but there was one last twist in this game.

Deep into stoppage time in the second half of extra time, Tielemans was brought down in the penalty area while attempting to reach a cross. Initially, it was not given as a penalty, but after a lengthy VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, eliciting strong protests from the Senegal bench.

The decision appeared harsh, but it was fair. Tielemans stepped up from the spot and calmly slotted it past in the top corner, completing his brace and one of the greatest World Cup comebacks in history. Tielemans' goal also set a World Cup record for the latest goal scored.

For Belgium, this game could be the turning point of their World Cup campaign. Rudi Garcia's team completed an incredible "remontada" against all odds, which will instill new confidence in the players as the tournament progresses.

This was also Belgium's second knockout stage victory since their memorable run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and the win could instill new hope, as it is the golden generation's final chance to achieve something.

Senegal will depart the United States in the most cruel manner. They were within touching distance of their first World Cup knockout win until the 86th minute, but their dream was cut short in heartbreaking fashion.

While the late penalty was controversial, their collapse in the final minute seemed harsh, given that their performance deserved the game to go to penalties.

However, football is an unpredictable sport, and no one can predict who will win until the final whistle is blown. Belgium's incredible comeback served as a reminder, and they did something very similar in 2018 against Japan, coming from behind by two goals.

The Red Devils' World Cup dreams remain alive, while Senegal is still trying to figure out what went wrong and how a win slipped through their fingers in one unforgettable night of football.
