The 2026 FIFA World Cup featured one of the most unforgettable nights of drama and heartbreak, with European giants Germany and the Netherlands eliminated on penalties by Paraguay and Morocco, respectively.

In a tournament that has already provided so many stories and surprises, one of Europe's most prominent sides buckled under the pressure of the penalty shootout, while Paraguay celebrated their most historic result in the country's history, and Morocco maintained their form from the previous World Cup, when they defeated Spain on penalties in the round of 16.

The most unexpected outcome came from the clash between Germany and Paraguay. Most expected the Germans to breeze past Paraguay after such a dominant group stage performance, scoring the most goals. Tactically, Julian Nagelsmann's side appeared adaptable, but Paraguay had different plans.

The South Americans dominated the game with discipline and determination, frustrating Germany throughout. Despite dominating possession, the European giants were unable to create clear-cut chances, and their lack of a proven goalscorer was particularly detrimental.

Kai Havertz equalised in the second half, cancelling Paraguay's early goal from star player Julio Enciso. However, as the game progressed, Paraguay's confidence grew as Germany continued to thwart attacks. Jonathan Tah had a goal controversially ruled out in extra time, but aside from that, neither team could create a clear-cut opportunity.

Paraguay were content to defend without their lives, forcing the game to a penalty shootout. When it arrived, the pressure shifted immediately to Germany, which had failed to advance to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2014.

Despite Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade missing two crucial penalties, Manuel Neuer’s heroics ensured sudden death but only for Jonathan Tah to sky his penalty while Jose Canale calmly converted his one to send Paraguay to their first-ever World Cup knockout win. Orlando Gill's incredible performance made him the hero of the night for all Paraguayans.

As the winning penalty struck the back of the net, the players dashed towards the fans, sparking a wild celebration of the country's greatest World Cup victory. If Germany's exit was shocking, the Netherlands' elimination at the hands of reigning AFCON champions Morocco was just as dramatic.

Because of their strong group stage performance, the Dutch were considered slight favourites in the competition. Their attacking prowess and impressive defence had persuaded many fans around the world that Ronald Koeman's team could advance deep into the tournament. However, Morocco arrived at the scene significantly improved from the previous time, with even better tactical discipline, which proved to be decisive on the big stage once more.

Mohamed Ouhabi's team transformed the game into a complex tactical battle, with Morocco controlling large periods of possession and dictating tempo while Koeman's team remained organised and patient.

The Netherlands had to wait for their chance, which came late in the second half when Cody Gakpo put them ahead. It was a heartfelt moment when Gakpo dedicated his goal to his late son, who died at birth this week. However, Issa Diop's towering header in injury time cancelled Gakpo's goal, sending the game to overtime.

In extra time, goalkeepers Bart Verbruggen and Yassine Bounou both made outstanding saves to force the game to penalties. Bounou was the hero for Morocco again in the shootout, saving Crysencio Summerville's game-winning penalty as they defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties.

Bounou's save sparked wild celebrations throughout the stadium, as the Moroccan players expressed their gratitude to the fans who had travelled all the way to the US. After establishing themselves as one of the teams to beat, the Atlas Lions added another memorable chapter to their World Cup history by defeating the Netherlands and continuing to advance in football.

Morocco and Paraguay have advanced further into the knockout rounds, demonstrating that in the World Cup, any team with belief and determination can defeat comparatively stronger opponents on paper.

As the tournament progresses, the shocking exits of Germany and the Netherlands will be remembered as one of the World Cup's defining moments. Paraguay and Morocco are confidently pursuing their dreams. Paraguay will face France in the next round, while Morocco will face hosts Canada, both of which promise blockbuster drama.
