The Rodri transfer saga is finally over, midfielder, and the Spanish World Cup-winning captain is set to sign for FC Barcelona.
The 30-year-old has arrived in Barcelona to complete his move from Manchester City in what is arguably the Catalan giant's biggest statement signing this summer.
The Spaniard has landed in Barcelona on Monday to complete his medical and complete the final formalities of the transfer that makes him return to his home country after seven seasons in England under Pep Guardiola.
Barcelona and Manchester City have reportedly agreed on a deal worth £65.3 million alongside performance bonuses and add-ons.
Rodri is set to sign a four-year contract with the Catalan giants, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.
His arrival is quite significant for the club, and his price tag is totally worth it. At 30, Rodri is returning to La Liga as one of the most decorated midfielders, and he has been one of the most influential players of this generation.
He joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid back in 2019 and went on to be the heartbeat of Manchester City's midfield alongside Kevin De Bruyne.
During his seven seasons at Manchester City, Rodri made 298 appearances for the club and won 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
He also scored the only winning goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. A year later, he won the Ballon d'or, becoming the first Spanish player to win the award since 1960.
Rodri also lifted the UEFA Euro 2024 and led Spain during the 2026 campaign, where they emerged victorious. Therefore, his return to Spain is coming at the peak of his career.
For Barcelona this signing is massive. Since Sergio Busquets left the club, they've been searching for a midfielder who can control games with the same leadership and vision which Busquets had.
Rodri isn't a direct replacement of the Spanish legend, but his positional awareness, ability to beat the press, passing and ability to dictate the tempo of the game make him the closest player to Busquets who could replace him at his position.
His profile also suits Barcelona's style of football. Having developed in Spain before spending seven years under Guardiola, it makes him a perfect fit for a team that dominates games with the ball.
Real Madrid also wanted to pursue Rodri, but the 30-year-old rejected them and ultimately chose Barcelona because of their style of football and his relationship with several Spanish teammates who played a key role in influencing his decision.
However, for Manchester City, it's the end of a beautiful era, as Rodri was arguably the heart of Guardiola’s midfield. The city was a completely different side with him on the pitch over, midfielder, but now they have begun preparing for life without him.
The club broke the British transfer record to sign Elliot Anderson and now are pursuing 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Barcelona haven't just signed a Ballon d'Or midfielder; they've signed a World Cup winner, a Ballon d'or winner and the player who spent seven years controlling Manchester City’s midfield as they dominated England and Europe.
Rodri revealed upon arriving in Barcelona that joining the club was a dream and his biggest objective is to compete for every trophy, especially the Champions League that has eluded the club for the past 11 years.
