Cristiano Ronaldo has clearly indicated that his extraordinary playing career is coming to an end, and it may be closer than it appears.
The Portugal and Al Nassr captain, now 41, has revealed that the current 2026-27 season could be his last as a professional footballer.
As a result, there is a high probability that one of the longest and most decorated football careers will come to an end by next year. Ronaldo hinted about his future in an interview with Vogue after marrying long-term partner Georgina Rodríguez.
"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," said Ronaldo, making it very clear that retirement is something he is considering after this season. (sic)
However, he has not announced a formal retirement date, which leaves the door open for a change of heart, especially for a player who has always trained and competed with great enthusiasm.
He is under contract with Al Nassr until June 2027, so his current contract may signal the end of his playing career.
However, the goal machine is still pursuing a massive personal milestone that is within his grasp. Ronaldo is approaching 1000 career goals for club and country, having already scored 976.
Reaching the four-figure mark would be an incredible capstone to his stellar career, which has already produced numerous records; it would be the perfect cherry on top. From Sporting CP to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and now Al Nassr, Ronaldo has won every possible trophy and individual honour.
He has also won five Ballon d’or titles, five Champions League titles and domestic leagues in Spain, England, Italy and even Saudi Arabia. With Portugal, he lifted the UEFA Euros in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His international career has also reached its conclusion. Ronaldo confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final appearance in the tournament, making it his record sixth.
However, Portugal's campaign ended in heartbreak when they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by champions Spain, leaving CR7's dream of lifting the World Cup unfinished.
The 41-year-old has revealed that he has planned his future, which includes travelling, spending time with his family, playing padel, and enjoying life after his playing career is over.
His pursuit of 1000 goals continues, and his longevity has been one of the most defining aspects of his career.
Even at an age when most professional footballers have retired, he continues to score regularly for Al Nassr, serves as Portugal's captain, and holds the record for most international goals.
However, for the first time, the end of his career is approaching, and he has spoken openly about the possibility of leaving professional football.
The end is approaching, and when it comes, football will be saying goodbye not simply to one of its greatest players, but to an era that defined this generation and inspired millions of youngsters to take up the sport.
