France maintained their position as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32. A sensational brace from Kylian Mbappe and a clinical finish from Bradley Barcola ensured Didier Deschamps' side advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay, who defeated four-time winners Germany in the Round of 32.
After sweeping through the group stage with three consecutive victories, with Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele leading the French attack, they entered the game against Sweden as clear favourites to maintain their momentum. The Vikings knew they'd have to put on one of their best performances in history to prevent this French superteam from progressing to the Round of 16.
In the first half, Sweden appeared to be compact and posed a challenge to France. They also created an early opportunity when Mike Maignan denied Alexander Isak. However, for the rest of the half, France maintained pressure on the Swedish defence, which paid off with only two minutes remaining until halftime.
A slick pass from a corner split the Swedish backline, and Kylian Mbappé did the rest, giving France a well-deserved lead at the break. With this goal, Mbappe surpassed Miroslav Klose's World Cup goal tally.
France doubled their lead just eight minutes into the second half when Michael Olise found Bradley Barcola, who slotted home to secure Les Bleus' place in the next round. This goal completely altered the complexion of the game, breaking the confidence of the Swedish players and allowing France to play with greater confidence in possession. With Sweden pushing harder to find a goal, space opened up for France to exploit, and it eventually delivered the final blow to the Swedish hearts.
Mbappe completed his brace with another brilliant assist from Olise, and he sealed the win with an excellent finish. With this goal, Mbappé matched Lionel Messi as the World Cup's joint top scorer with 19 goals. While Mbappe put on another incredible performance, Michael Olise was outstanding throughout the game, even hitting the crossbar with a bicycle effort in the first half.
France dominated every aspect of the game and showed no signs of weakness against Sweden. Defensively, where they had previously struggled, they appeared dominant and held Sweden at bay.
This victory highlights France's squad depth and the quality of their frontline, with each of the three forwards capable of winning a game with their own brilliance. This team functions as a unit, which is why they've become the team to beat, and their firepower intimidates any opponent they face.
Sweden will leave the tournament with their heads held high after reaching the knockout rounds, but they were ultimately up against a French team operating on a completely different level. Despite having their moments, they were outmatched by France's attacking prowess, and their inability to finish up front cost them the game.
France will now focus on the RO16 match against Paraguay, who stunned Germany in the RO32, causing one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup. If they perform as well as they did against Sweden, they will have an easy time against Paraguay, but they must be humble against the South Americans, who are known for hunting down giants. However, Didier Deschamps' team is heavy favourites to make a deep run in the tournament, with Kylian Mbappé leading from the front.
