England have advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic victory over DR Congo, with talisman Harry Kane saving the day once again. The 32-year-old demonstrated why he is still a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or this year, as his brace rescued Thomas Tuchel's side, which appeared to be heading for one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

The Bayern Munich forward produced two moments of pure brilliance to book a meeting with co-hosts Mexico in the next round.

DR Congo stunned the world in the seventh minute, when Brian Cipenga took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Three Lions to put the African side ahead. The goal completely stunned the stadium and the English players, and instead of sitting deeper after scoring, Congo maintained a high level of intensity and continued to put pressure on England.

Congo defended with remarkable discipline, as they had throughout the group stages, and their compact shape frustrated England's attack. Lionel Mpasi delivered one of the best goalkeeping performances of the World Cup, repeatedly denying England a goal.

England continued to dominate possession but lacked the finishing touch, and as the game progressed, they became predictable. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in midfield attempted to dictate the pace of the game and create opportunities, but Congo denied them any space between the lines.

With each block and clearance, the African team's momentum grew, and it appeared they would cause the biggest World Cup upset. The clock ticked into the final quarter of the game, and England's hopes were hanging by a thread until Thomas Tuchel introduced Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, pushing Declan Rice to right-back.

This change proved to be a masterclass, and as England's hopes faded, Harry Kane rose to the occasion, as he has many times in his career for the Three Lions. Anthony Gordon's introduction on the left flank had an immediate impact, as he delivered an inswinging cross into the box, which Kane timed perfectly before heading it past Mpasi and rescuing England. Tuchel's side looked completely different after the goal, regaining all of their lost momentum.

DR Congo, who had defended tenaciously throughout the game, succumbed to England's pressure. Kane scored the game-winner when he latched onto Gordon's brilliant pass, brushed past three Congo defenders, and unleashed a powerful strike past Mpasi in the goal.

It was a potential goal for the World Cup contender, and it sparked wild celebrations throughout the stadium, which was mostly full of English fans. Kane surpassed Pele's World Cup goal tally with his fifth of the tournament. This was England's first World Cup comeback victory since the 1966 final.

While Kane saved England this time with his individual brilliance, Tuchel's side has shown signs of vulnerability with a lack of creativity in the middle of the pitch. Constant defensive lapses were also visible, which their next opponents will attempt to exploit as the tournament progresses.

Tuchel will be relieved that his team avoided a major upset against Congo, but he must be aware that his team must improve significantly against Mexico in the Round of 16. The co-hosts have never lost a game at Azteca in the last eight years, and it is their fortress, making the challenge extremely difficult for England.

England will continue to march for the time being, but their performance was far from convincing. However, knockout football is determined by moments and is all about surviving under pressure. They'll live to see another day, thanks to Harry Kane's heroics, and their dream of winning the World Cup will continue.

This result eliminated DR Congo, but they can go home with pride. They've pushed far beyond their weight and competed with the world's best teams, earning admiration throughout the football world. Their rise is one of the World Cup's most remarkable stories.
