Every World Cup produces a team that steals the hearts of all football fans, and Norway will be that team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Scandinavian giants returned to this stage for the first time since 1998, but not as underdogs but as genuine dark horses, following an incredible qualifying campaign in which they finished first in their group and defeated Italy twice. Norway announced their arrival as an elite team in the group stages, and for the first time in history, they advanced to the knockout stage.

Erling Haaland scored again as they defeated the Ivory Coast in a thrilling Round of 32 match. Haaland scored his 13th consecutive goal in international games and his fifth goal of the World Cup, trailing only Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, who each have six goals.

The Manchester City striker has delivered on the biggest stage, leading Norway from the front. However, he is not solely responsible for their success.

Norway's success has been built on team unity, bonding, and incredible tactical discipline under head coach Stale Solbakken. His decision to make ten changes to his lineup in the final group game against France surprised everyone, but with qualification already secured, he chose the players' freshness over momentum ahead of the RO32 match.

His gamble cost him a loss to France, but it was well-planned to avoid fatigue and injuries, as he was fully aware of the difficult path ahead in the tournament.

Against Ivory Coast, Norway put on a complete performance, and despite the Africans' valiant efforts, the Vikings were well-organised defensively and posed the greater offensive threat. They dominated the tempo in midfield and demonstrated the poise of a team capable of defeating any team on their day.

Skipper Martin Odegaard was also instrumental in this game, thanks to his exceptional ability to connect and dictate play. The Norwegian midfield is built around him, and his availability contributes significantly to creativity.

Norway's backline has remained compact, and their defensive cohesion has been admirable. Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland has also been outstanding between the posts, making some crucial saves.

The team's collective effort to defend and attack together has shown in their performances, which are improving with each game. The greatest strength of this Norwegian team is not Erling Haaland or any other player, but rather their bond, unity, and mentality.

This is Norway's golden generation, and while previous generations have struggled under the pressure of representing the country on the biggest stage, this squad has welcomed the opportunity and is celebrating it at all times.

The Norwegian fans have been outstanding, and the famous Viking Row celebration has been a pleasure to watch, even for neutrals. This team is growing in confidence, and it demonstrates that they are ready to face any team, regardless of status.

The road ahead is difficult, as they will face Brazil, the most successful World Cup team. However, we've seen in this edition that Norway fears no opposition and can be a threat to any defence, especially with Erling Haaland up top alongside Oscar Bobb and Nusa.

Fuelled by incredible collective unity, Norway's golden generation has already exceeded national expectations and will play without pressure against Brazil, making them even more dangerous.

With momentum and belief on their side and a team stronger than ever, the Vikings are just one game away from making history, which seemed impossible at the start of the tournament.

Many had written them off due to a lack of prior experience, but they have dismissed all doubts. The Norwegian fairytale lives on, and it may continue to do so if they can shock a free-flowing Brazil in the next stage.
