Portugal booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Croatia in Toronto, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first ever World Cup knockout goal before super-sub Goncalo Ramos headed in a stoppage-time winner.
In a game which had it all with controversy and late drama, Roberto Martinez's side showed incredible mentality and resilience to fight back from one goal down and set up an RO16 clash with neighbours Spain.
This game carried special significance as it was set to be the last dance for two icons of the game. At 41, Ronaldo was making an appearance on the world's biggest stage alongside 40-year-old Luka Modric, who was expected to be playing his final World Cup game in his illustrious career.
Both the legends of the game delivered in the game, and it was a game probably no one deserved to lose. Portugal dominated with the ball in the first half but failed to create any clear-cut chances and were incredibly slow on transition.
Croatia, on the other hand, remained compact and patient without the ball. Rafael Leao was excellent from the flanks, and Dominik Livakovic produced excellent saves to deny Portugal on multiple occasions. After the interval, Croatia looked like a completely different side and deservedly took the lead when Josip StaniĆĄiÄ delivered a cross into the box which was met by veteran Ivan PeriĆĄiÄ, who slotted it past Diogo Costa in goal.
Zlatko Dalic's game plan seemed to be heading in the perfect direction, and it felt that Portugal would crumble again, as they've never recovered from a goal deficit in a knockout game of the World Cup before.
However, Portugal did not panic and crumble like they used to in the past and showed incredible resistance. They were rewarded with a penalty after a long VAR check after Renato Veiga was fouled during the corner kick. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up from the spot. The goal was of great significance to his legendary career as he bagged his first knockout goal and becamethe oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match.Â
However, soon after with extra time looming and Portugal chasing the winning goal, Martinez made a decision which surprised many. He subbed off Ronaldo and introduced Goncalo Ramos, and the gamble paid off. Fourth minute into the stoppage time, the substitute jumped highest to meet Leo's cross and slotted it past a helpless LivakoviÄ. The goal sparked wild celebrations across the stadium packed with Portuguese fans, but the drama was far from over as they thought.
Deep into stoppage time, Croatia thought they had forced the game to extra time with the last kick of the game when Josko Gvardiol scrambled the ball into the net. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out controversially for offside, crushing Croatian hearts and confirming Portugal's place in the next round of the World Cup. The decision sparked furious protests from the Croatian players and supporters, but ultimately it didn't matter.
The victory carried deep significance for the Portuguese side, as the game came exactly one year after the tragic death of Diogo Jota, and the team paid an emotional tribute to their former teammate. Ronaldo appeared in tears after full time, and he held up Jotaâs no. 21 shirt and pointed towards the sky in an emotional celebration.
For Croatia, the defeat marks an end of an era with most veterans likely to leave, including skipper Luka Modric, who led this team to the final of the World Cup in 2018 and the semi-finals in 2022.
Portugal will now march on to the RO16 with more confidence and belief, where they will meet their rivals Spain in the Iberian derby. In this game Martinezâs side have proved that they can overcome adversities and possess both depth and quality from the bench. The Seleção are firmly in contention for the World Cup, and Ronaldo's dreams are alive.
