Barcelona have reignited their hope of getting Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, with increasing signs that the Argentine is losing patience with his experience in the Spanish capital.
As per renowned sources, people close to Alvarez indicate that frustration is beginning to set in as he now questions if Atletico's present formation can really provide the trophies that he desires. Even though one of Diego Simeone's best players, Alvarez is said to feel the limitations of the team might restrict his goal of claiming big honours both domestically and in the continent.
When Alvarez moved to Atletico, he was swayed by Simeone's vision and assurances that the team would build a side that would be competing for titles on a regular basis. The transfer, valued at nearly €80 million, was regarded as an investment for the future in a player who would mature to be among Europe's top forwards. But that fantasy has not come true yet.
Why does Alvarez want to sever bonds with Atletico Madrid?
Atletico have found it hard to keep up with Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga, and their recent European failures — such as the agonizing defeat to Arsenal — have only added to the feeling of stagnation about the club. Even Alvarez's hard work and brilliant displays could not offset the team's failure to compete at the top level, and he grew more and more disheartened.
After the loss to Arsenal, Alvarez's body language spoke volumes head down, clearly deflated, and trudging off the field in silence. His friends say the defeat was a turning point, illustrating his increasing doubts about Atletico's competitiveness. It was not an isolated phenomenon either. Earlier this season, he visibly protested when being replaced against Mallorca, dissenting from Simeone's tactical decisions.
Sources in the club confirm that although Alvarez continues to be professional and respectful of the club to the core, he is beginning to wonder whether his mid-term goals can be fulfilled at Atletico. His aspiration to fight for league titles as well as the Champions League may eventually compel him to seek new opportunities.
Barcelona, cognizant of the circumstances, are closely monitoring events. The Catalan giants view Alvarez as a perfect addition to their attacking ethos and a possible long-term solution to fortify their forward line. Sources at the club allegedly feel that if Atletico do not make further progress or compete for top silverware in the near future, Alvarez might be attracted to a transfer to Camp Nou.
At this moment, Alvarez is not thinking about an immediate exit through a surprise transfer. Close friends claim he wants to remain at Atletico until at least 2026, as a mark of respect for the team that took a chance on him. But the increasing feeling of discontent cannot be overlooked, and unless Atletico can keep up with his ambition, a departure in the years to come is more and more likely one that might allow Barcelona to finally sign their man.
