Unai Emery and his men have managed to secure yet another crucial victory in their push to secure a Champions League spot for the next season by outclassing Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park last night, picking up three crucial points in the race for a top 5 finish.
Second-half goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara were enough for Aston Villa to seal a 2-0 victory over Spurs, who have fallen down to new heights having already experienced what has been their worst league campaign ever in the Premier League.
Last night’s 3 points have taken the Villains to the fifth spot with 66 points, being on level terms with Chelsea and Newcastle United at the fourth and third spots, respectively.
Newcastle’s game in hand can prove to be the decider, while Manchester City, who sit at the sixth spot with 65 points, also have a game in hand, which can well and truly decide the fate of this exhilarating top 5 race in the Premier League.
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur: In Brief
Despite managing to breeze past Spurs, the opening few minutes were somewhat of a challenge for Aston Villa as the North Londoners were busy attempting to apply early pressure on Villa’s defence with strings of attacks; however, they failed to really test Villa’s star goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez.
The difference in the spirit and momentum was clearly evident between both the teams, as Villa seemed far more dedicated and energetic than their opponents, whose league campaign has already come to a premature end, with nothing to fight for.
Despite Unai Emery’s strong push for an early goal and Villa’s 8 attempted shots, with 3 of them being on target, Tottenham’s young talent, Antonin Kinksy, managed to keep his side at bay at the half-time mark, making 3 big saves.
The second half saw even more dominance from the hosts, who clearly had upped their intensity by pushing players high up the pitch from the wings while holding on to the ball even more.
Aston Villa’s constant efforts finally paid off at the 59th-minute mark, where Ezri Konsa hammered in a towering header from a low-hanging corner delivery by John McGinn, giving them the deserved lead.
It did not take Unai Emery’s men long to seal the deal, as just 14 minutes later, at the 72nd-minute mark, Morgan Roger’s delicate pass at the edge of the six-yard box allowed the deep-lying Boubacar Kamara to step up and fire a powerful shot past Kinksy to secure all three points for his team.
