Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero was sent off against Manchester United as the Red Devils cruised past the north London club by 2-0, earning three crucial points. However, his reckless action left Tottenham fans furious, leading to massive outbursts across social media.

Romero was shown a direct red for a reckless challenge on Casemiro when the clock had just hit the 30-minute mark. The Argentine international later apologised to his teammates and owned up to his error in judgement.

Although Thomas Frank defended his skipper in the post-match press conference, this was the sixth time Romero had been sent off as a skipper. Several pundits and fans have called out the Argentine for letting his team down and demanded his removal as the captain.

This result left Spurs stranded on 15th in the table with just 29 points in 25 games. Boss Thomas Frank confirmed that the Argentine World Cup winner felt sorry for his actions and insisted that he didn't intentionally mean to hurt the Brazilian.

"The red card is a red card; I've watched it back five times. Cuti tried to go for the ball. You play with passion and aggression, and there's a fine line,” said Frank post-match. (sic)

He further added, “He apologised to his teammates in the changing room. He's one of our most important players. He doesn't have any intention of getting a red card.”  (sic)

This was Romero’s second red card of the season, and he has been slapped with a four-match ban. He is set to miss key clashes against Newcastle United, Fulham, Crystal Palace and the prestigious North London derby against arch-nemesis Arsenal.

The Argentine has been sent off four times in the Premier League, which is the joint most by any Spurs player alongside Younes Kaboul. The fact that he's the skipper has led him to facing heat from all ends.

"This is a disaster for Thomas Frank. As a manager, you're sitting in 14th and you're going, 'My captain has come out and said this.' Now he leaves his team down to 10 men,” said former Tottenham skipper Michael Dawson. (sic)

He further added, "I'm baffled. As a captain, you're supposed to lead by example. You leave your team vulnerable, 10 men at Old Trafford. You're losing your captain and one of your best players. He's let his team down again today.” (sic)
