They just would not yield!: Cape Verde frustrates World Cup favourites Spain to earn a historic point on their World Cup debut

Cape Verde, a small African island nation, made an impression on football's biggest stage with a brave and disciplined performance, drawing 0-0 with reigning European champions Spain in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The entire country celebrated this historic moment, which is the biggest story of this World Cup so far, when the debutants upset one of the favourites to win the trophy.

For Spain, it was a frustrating night, but for Africa, it was a day to make history. La Roja entered the pitch as overwhelming favourites, and with a talented squad, they were expected to start their campaign with a comfortable win over Cape Verde.

Cape Verde earned global respect, and it now leaves Group H open after Uruguay and Saudi Arabia tied 1-1. Although Spain remains the favourite to win this group, dropping points against Uruguay could be costly for La Roja. Cape Verde, on the other hand, will dream big and hope to achieve impressive results against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay after giving themselves the opportunity against Spain.
