Defending champions Argentina were on the verge of a sensational FIFA World Cup exit from the Round of 16 at the hands of Egypt, trailing 2-0 in Atlanta. For 79 minutes, it appeared that the brave Pharaohs would make the unthinkable their fate.

Lionel Messi missed a penalty early in the second half, and with only 10 minutes remaining, Argentina's hopes of winning their fourth World Cup appeared to be fading.

However, demonstrating their "champions" mentality, Lionel Scaloni's team staged one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history. Prior to this game, Argentina had never won a game in which they were down at halftime.

Messi and his teammates turned disaster into jubilation by scoring three goals in just 12 minutes, securing a 3-2 victory. Messi's final dance is still alive as Argentina seeks to retain the World Cup, becoming the only nation to do so after Brazil and Italy.

Egypt entered the match as underdogs, but they showed no fear. Hossam Hassan's team defended with great discipline and pressed hard, leaving Argentina with no breathing room. Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Zico, and Haissem Hassan led the Pharaohs forward. In the 15th minute, Yasser Ibrahim scored a brilliant header over Lisandro MartĂnez, shocking Argentina.

Argentina responded quickly to the deficit, and their pressure was rewarded later in the first half when Tagliafico won a penalty. However, Messi squandered a golden opportunity to level the score as Egyptian custodian Mostafa Shobeir made a sensational save to keep his team ahead.

La Albiceleste kept possession after the break, but Egypt remained compact defensively and dangerous on the break. Hassan's team had a goal disallowed, but they doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Mostafa Zico finished from close range after a quick counterattack, putting them on the verge of one of the most shocking World Cup upsets.

With only 11 minutes remaining, Lionel Scaloni's team needed a miracle to save itself. Argentina's prayers, like those of people praying to God for miracles, were answered by their own god, Lionel Messi. The comeback began in the 79th minute, when Christian Romero powerfully headed past Shobeir following a perfect cross from Messi.

Suddenly, the Argentines began to believe, and the momentum shifted dramatically in their favour. Just 4 minutes later, the unavoidable happened. Messi, who had had a frustrating game up to that point, scored the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

This goal not only restored parity for La Albiceleste, but it also extended Messi's goal-scoring streak to nine games and returned him to the top of the World Cup Golden Boot standings.

Egypt was stunned and completely disorganised following that goal. While chasing the winner, Argentina detected a weakness in Egypt's defence and executed it flawlessly.

Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez met a floating cross from substitute Lautaro Martinez and headed it past a helpless Shobeir, capping one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history. Argentina's players erupted in spectacular celebrations, while Egyptians appeared devastated.

However, the drama did not end there, as Egypt's players and coaching staff were outraged by several match officials' decisions. They requested a late penalty from the VAR just before Argentina scored the winner. Following the defeat, the Egyptian FA filed a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the consistency of VAR and match officiating.

Despite the controversy, this game demonstrated Argentina's mentality, as it had done in the previous game against Cape Verde. Lionel Scaloni's ability to execute his Plan B when Plan A fails has been a defining feature of this Argentina team.

This result is heartbreaking for Egypt, as they were on the verge of qualifying for a historic quarterfinal. It was their first World Cup knockout appearance, and winning against the world's top-ranked team would have made it even more memorable. Egypt, motivated by a tremendous collective effort, pushed Argentina to its limits, earning admiration from everyone despite being eliminated.

Argentina will now advance to the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland, who defeated Colombia on penalties. Lionel Messi and his teammates barely survived thanks to Messi's individual brilliance, but this victory served as a wake-up call.

They were slow to defend transitions, and their tendency to crumble defensively may cost them in future games. However, as the tournament has shown, Lionel Messi and Argentina should never be written off until the final whistle, because just when elimination seemed inevitable, they found a way to come back, and only champions can pull off such feats.
