Cristiano Ronaldo's final FIFA World Cup appearance ended cruelly, with Portugal eliminated by arch rivals Spain in the Round of 16 after a tense 1-0 defeat. Substitute Mikel Merino scored an injury-time winner to send the European champions into the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, while also bringing an end to one of the greatest players the game has ever seen in the competition.
Ronaldo announced ahead of the game that this would be his final appearance on football's biggest stage, and the headlines were all about this historic moment. At 41, this was the Portuguese captain's last chance to achieve his dream of winning the World Cup.
The stage was set for a fairytale finish, which could have been a memorable chapter in his already stellar career, but football isn't always about fairytales, and not everyone has a happy ending.Â
However, the game began in a cagey fashion, with both teams playing cautious football in order to avoid conceding the first goal. Despite both teams' tremendous attacking talent, the Iberian derby failed to live up to expectations.
Spain patiently dominated possession but failed to mount a meaningful attack. On the other hand, Roberto Martinez's team was well-organised defensively but lacked the creativity and vision to trouble Spain's defence.
Portugal's highly talented midfield, which included Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and Joao Neves, struggled to dominate against Spain's ball control in the centre of the park. Cristiano Ronaldo was left isolated up top with few clear-cut chances; the 41-year-old created space, but there was no pass into the box.
Extra time seemed unavoidable, and the way the game progressed, it appeared destined to end in penalties. Both teams were defensively cautious, aware that they could concede the first goal. However, Portugal's lack of concentration resulted in a goal in the first minute of stoppage time.
Substitute Ferran Torres slipped a cheeky pass to substitute Mikel Merino, who calmly slotted his shot past Diogo Costa. It was a standout moment from both substitutes, and it ultimately sealed Portugal's and Ronaldo's fate.
The final whistle blew, resulting in scenes of incredible contrast. While Spain celebrated their qualification to the knockout stages and their first win in the Round of 16 since 2010, Portugal's players collapsed to the ground, dejected.
Ronaldo was seen in tears as he walked away, probably realising that his World Cup journey had come to an end. Although this tournament has eluded him throughout his career, his legacy remains intact.
In six World Cup tournaments, he inspired millions to support Portugal, set records, and carried the Iberian nation's expectations. Every time he stepped onto the pitch in that jersey, he carried the hopes of his entire country on his shoulders and brought them joy.
His most notable achievements with his country were leading the Portuguese to victory in the Euro Championship in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025, respectively. CR7 transformed the country's football history and played a significant role in establishing them as a footballing powerhouse alongside England, France, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain.
Portugal, on the other hand, will be left wondering how they exited the tournament so quickly despite having such a strong squad and depth. They entered the tournament as top contenders, boasting one of the strongest midfields in international competition, and many saw them as favourites to win the World Cup, putting the cherry on Cristiano Ronaldo's career cake.
Roberto Martinez's cautious approach with this team has drawn a lot of criticism, and rightfully so. Martinez has now officially left this position and will be replaced by Jorge Jesus, who previously coached Al Nassr. Despite having a stellar squad, the Spaniard disappointed everyone with his in-game strategies and tactics.
For Spain, they kept their dreams alive, and Luis de la Fuente's team delivered when it mattered most. They are the only team in the tournament that has not conceded a single goal, with 5 clean sheets so far. La Roja will face Belgium in the quarterfinals, after defeating hosts USA in the Round of 16.
For Ronaldo, this game will be a disappointment, and his fans will try to forget it as soon as possible. There was no fairytale ending, no dramatic comeback, only tears and a bittersweet farewell to a legend who defined an era in Portuguese football.
An era comes to an end as the boy from Madeira Island who dreamed of conquering the world with Portugal leaves the World Cup stage as one of the greatest players to ever grace the game, even if this trophy will never be added to his trophy cabinet.
