Defending champions Argentina secured a sensational 3-2 victory over a resilient Egyptian side in a thrilling Round of 16 clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Egyptian team, led by captain Mohamed Salah, had put up an astonishing display to stun Lionel Scaloni's men and stood just minutes away from causing a massive upset before the phenomenon known as Lionel Messi came to life and sparked Argentina's stunning comeback with a brilliant goal and an assist.
The final heartbreak for Egypt landed in the 90+3rd minute of the game when a controversial decision allowed Argentina to launch a quick counterattack, which ended with Enzo FernĂĄndez burying the ball at the back of Mostafa Shobeir's net and winning the game for his team.
The quality of football in the intense battle was of the highest level, therefore cementing its place amongst the greatest knockout matches in World Cup history. However, the majority of the post-game discussion about this classic has centered on accusations that the game was "rigged" to keep Lionel Messi and the defending champions in the competition in order to generate revenue and for apparent political purposes.
Egypt, led by manager Hossam Hassan and star player Mostafa Ziko, were openly calling out the referees' decisions, which, according to them, were not fairly given and the officiating in the game was completely "biased" towards Argentina. Hossam Hassan even questioned the integrity of the tournament, claiming it to be "rigged for Argentina."
The Egyptian FA has now even filed a formal complaint to FIFA and the other governing bodies asking for the conduction of a deep investigation of all the decisions made in the game while also demanding questions from the entire officiating team, led by Francois Letexier. According to some sources, even the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now reportedly planning on launching an investigation to trace the Argentine Football Association's USA-based operations over alleged money laundering and fraud worth up to $300m.
What are the most-talked about moments of the Argentina-Egypt clash, sparking a massive uproar?
One of the most talked-about decisions of the entire game was regarding Egypt's complaint about their disallowed goal in the second half, where star forward Mostafa Zico believed he had given his team a two-goal cushion following a slick counterattack from his team, only for the VAR to intervene and recommend that referee Francois Letexier conduct an on-field review via the monitor a few moments later.
The goal was eventually ruled out because the match officials deemed there had been an apparent foul on Lisandro Martinez in the build-up leading to the goal. This decision divided the world into various camps, causing a massive uproar amongst fans and experts.
Upon review, the footage clearly showed a contact being made to Lisandro Martinez's right foot before Egypt launched the counterattack that resulted in their second goal, but many deem the touch to be minimal and not worthy of a foul, while the officials and the people on the other side of the debate remain affirmative on it being a clear foul.
Former England striker Alan Shearer, along with several fans, has even questioned the officiating team's decision to go "110 yards back" to review an incident that eventually resulted in the goal being chopped off. Well, to understand this better, we must take a look at the standard protocol and the set of procedures the officials need to follow in such situations.
According to Section 1 (Reviewable decisions/incidents) of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) protocol, if an apparent foul has been committed in the buildup play leading to a goal, no matter how long ago or how far away from the incident, the VAR must review the entire sequence and then determine whether the goal shall stand or not.
While discussions on whether the contact made on Lisandro Martinez was strong enough to be deemed a foul will continue to exist and rightly so, it should seem pretty clear that the officials followed the standard IFAB protocol when they decided to review the entire sequence of attacking play leading to Mostafa Ziko's disallowed goal.
Egypt's second big complaint concerned their late penalty appeals on two instances: the first involving their captain Mohamed Salah, who appeared to be brought down in the box by Julian Alvarez. The referee waved play on, and no VAR review was conducted, and the second one coming just moments before Argentina's winning goal, where Hamdy Fathy was pulled down by Alexis Mac Allister inside the penalty area.
Upon looking at the footage again, it appears pretty clear that Julian Alvarez got the ball first before making contact with Mo Salah's left ankle, which caused him to trip onto the ground. However, the second incident involving Alexis Mac Allister and Hamdy Fathy is where things get controversial.
Just moments before Argentina launched their match-winning counterattack, Hamdy Fathy was brought down by Argentina and Liverpool's star midfielder in an attempt to stop the Egyptian midfielder from getting onto the end of a cross. While the Egyptian players and bench erupted in appeal, referee Francois Letexier continued the play with the ball now with the Argentinians, who, in the same sequence, went on to score the winner.
When seeing the videos of the incident from different angles, there does seem to be an evident pull on Fathy's left shoulder by Alexis Mac Allister, following which the Egyptian went on to the ground. While there is clear contact from the Argentine midfielder, whether it was strong enough or not still remains up for discussion, with the majority stating this particular incident to be making the strongest claim for Egypt's case and appeal.
Apart from these major incidents, the Egyptians also pointed at several "light fouls" given in Argentina's favor and instances where the Argentine offenders should have been booked but were not.
Beautiful game amidst controversy: The Argentina v Egypt clash gave us a story for the ages
Controversy may have taken center stage in all the post-match discussions, but no one can take away the beautiful game that we witnessed in an enthralling battle between two top sides. From Egypt's stunning early display to Argentina's breathtaking comeback, led by the magical Lionel Messi, this game had it all.
The Egyptians should hold their heads up in pride after looking back at the incredible journey that they have been on, starting from the World Cup qualifiers. After a disappointing failure to reach the 2022 World Cup, the Pharos made a comeback at the grandest stage, looking stronger than ever, which even reflects upon the brilliant campaign that they had in this World Cup. From securing their first ever WC knockout win to bringing the defending champions to their knees, Mo Salah and co. have created memories worth a lifetime.
On the other hand, it was captain Lionel Messi once again for Argentina, who capped yet another magnificent display in what has already been an extraordinary 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign for him, but God knows how much this one would mean to him and his nation. A goal and an assist from the little maestro ignited the enthralling turnaround that the defending champions went on to complete, thus saving his nation once again from a major heartbreak.
Messi has now scored in nine consecutive FIFA World Cup finals games, has broken the record for the most World Cup assists previously held by Diego Maradona, and has extended his lead at the top of the all-time goal-scoring charts at the World Cup finals and is now also leading the 2026 WC Golden Boot race, standing ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane. What more can you say about the genius of this man!!
