“The bees' sting! ”: Brentford hammer Chelsea 3-0 as the Blues’ defensive woes continue
Chelsea’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season got worse on Friday night as Brentford produced a commanding second-half performance to beat the Blues 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Bees maintained their unbeaten start in the league while also climbing up to the 3rd spot, while Chelsea’s poor run of form continued in the league.
Xabi Alonso’s side controlled possession throughout the game but struggled to convert that into meaningful chances to trouble the opposition.
Xabi Alonso’s side were also missing important players, including Reece James, João Pedro and Moisés Caicedo due to injury, forcing the manager to make changes to his starting XI.
Former Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson made his Chelsea debut, while Danny Welbeck started up front. Keith Andrews’ side remained disciplined and compact at the back as they kept threatening Chelsea on the break.
Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring after Jannik Schuster won the aerial duel that created the opportunity.
The Bees then doubled their advantage through Brazilian striker Igor Thiago.
The goal came after Kristoffer Ajer intercepted a horrendous pass from Jordan Henderson, and Brentford quickly turned defence into attack.
Fabio Carvalho put the icing on the cake to the victory in stoppage time, adding a third goal to cap an emphatic night for Keith Andrews’ team.
For Brentford, the derby victory carried massive significance. It was their first home league victory over Chelsea since 1938, ending an 88-year wait for a win against their west London neighbours at home.
For Xabi Alonso's Chelsea, however, the concerns are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, especially in the defence.
The Blues had already conceded four goals in their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal and conceded twice in the 2-2 draw with newly promoted Hull City before the disastrous loss against Brentford.
Chelsea now have seven points from their opening five league matches, sitting in 7th position.
After a summer of significant squad rebuilding, Chelsea were expected to challenge higher up the table, and since they're not playing European football, they had a huge advantage over the other teams in terms of fitness as well.
Instead, their start to the new season has been defined by defensive uncertainty and dropped points consistently.
At the Gtech, Brentford ruthlessly exposed those weaknesses in defence and midfield turning the derby into a convincing 3-0 victory after a wait of 88 years.
