Ollie Watkins has made up his mind and informed Aston Villa of his decision regarding his future amidst the strong interest from Arsenal.
The 29-year-old striker has been a subject of speculation recently, following Arsenal’s £60 million bid for him, which was eventually turned down by Aston Villa just 2 days ago.
Watkins has been the Gunners’ top transfer target as they desperately search for a world-class striker.
Reports from Sky Sports indicated that Arsenal are not going to back down despite their first bid being rejected, and are expected to return with an improved offer for the star striker.
Arsenal have been confident about Watkins’ situation as the English striker has publicly expressed his admiration and willingness to play for the Gunners “someday.”.
However, in a major turn of events, and a big blow for Arsenal, Ollie Watkins has informed Aston Villa that he has no intention of leaving the club anytime soon.
“He is happy”: Unai Emery confirms Watkins’ stay
With Jhon Durán set to sign with Al-Nassr, the Aston Villa fans were extremely worried that they might lose both their star strikers in a matter of just a few weeks in case Watkins agrees to sign for the Gunners.
However, manager Unai Emery has given a major sigh of relief to the Villa fans by confirming Watkins’ decision to stay with the club, at least till the end of the season.
According to Sky Sports, while speaking in the post-match interview after the 4-2 win against Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday, Emery broke the good news to the Villa fans by saying, “Yes, he is happy to stay. We asked him how he is feeling, and he is happy here.” (sic)
Emery further said, “The commitment of Watkins is really a huge commitment to defend Aston Villa. He appreciates how Aston Villa was always supporting him and helping him. Also, when we joined two years ago, how we always tried to get the best of him.” (sic)
While it looks like Arsenal will miss out on Watkins, it seems only for now.
The Gunners are expected to continue their pursuit of the star striker in the summer, where they’d look to make a final effort to sign Watkins.
