FC Barcelona have emerged as the winners of the 41st edition of the Supercopa de España by demolishing Real Madrid by a scoreline of 5-2. The Catalan side lifted their first trophy of the season as Hansi Flick’s 100% win record in finals as a manager has stayed intact. Hansi Flick also joins the elite list of managers to win a trophy in his first season at Barcelona.
Más que una victoria: More than a win for Barcelona
Yesterday’s match would have meant more to Barcelona and their fans due to their incredible performance against their arch-rivals. A “confused” Real Madrid side could not deal with Barça’s unstoppable force and intensity. The La Liga leaders ended up being stunned with 5 goals, which means that the Los Blancos have now conceded 9 goals in just 2 games against Barcelona this season. Barça’s front three, comprising Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and the brilliant Raphinha, once again ran the show, with the trio bagging direct involvements in all 5 goals.
For Barcelona, such a win could not have come at a better time. After an underwhelming run of performances since the beginning of December, which saw them drop down to 3rd place in the La Liga points table from the top, such a performance was a statement. Amidst all this was also the frustration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor’s registration saga. However, just 3 days ago, FC Barcelona announced that they have successfully registered both the players, making them available for selection. Therefore, it's been an incredibly memorable week for the Culers.
Pressure mounts on Ancelotti and the new Galácticos
Back-to-back humiliations in the Clásico have boiled up the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti and his new Galácticos team. The arrival of Kylian Mbappé was the beginning of a new era for the club. Mbappé finally seems to have found his footing at the club, with the Frenchman bagging 7 goal involvements since the beginning of December. However, fans have now started to raise their doubts regarding the star player's fit in Ancelotti’s game plan.
Carlo Ancelotti's side has experienced some turbulence since Mbappé’s arrival, with some calling it a “clash of egos.” Even though Real are currently at the top of the La Liga points table, while also having already won 2 trophies this season, it still is quite evident that the team lacks balance and intensity, which was not the case in their successful campaign last season.
