Mohun Bagan Super Giant cruised past Punjab FC with a scoreline of 3-0 as they inch closer to defending their ISL title. This comfortable victory has also confirmed their qualification to the ISL playoffs.
The scoreline, however, does not reflect the overall game.
In the first half, it was a closely contested affair. Mohun Bagan were sloppy at times, but their rock-solid defence made sure they bagged all three points along with a valuable clean sheet.
Ezequiel Vidal was brilliant for Punjab. The Argentine could've also grabbed a brilliant assist for a sublime pass played. However, Punjab's striker, Petros Giakoumakis, missed the great opportunity, failing to break the deadlock for the visitors.
The Shers' gave everything to try and score, but Mohun Bagan's star defender, Dippendu Biswas, stood like a rock, intercepting almost every advanced pass played. The 21-year-old also completed the most passes in the game.
Mohun Bagan's attackers on point with their clinical finishing
Jamie Maclaren opened the scoreline for the Mariners' with a lovely finish against the run of play.
He later completed his brace with a gift from Punjab's goalkeeper, Ravi Kumar, who made a horrendous error while attempting a back pass to Jason Cummings.
Liston Colaco added the second goal for the Marines, which appeared to be aimed as a cross but luckily ended up at the back of the net.
Yesterday's win will surely give the Mohun Bagan fans a lot to cheer for, as they would have started to smell the ISL trophy once again.
“Defence wins you titles”: Mohun Bagan Super Giant defenders proving it
Mohun Bagan Super Giant started their season with a heavy defeat against Bengaluru FC. Following that, something has seemed to have sparked motivation in the team, which reignited the team’s mentality.
The Mariners' have scored the most goals in the league this season, but their main strength has been their solid defence. Molina has transformed Subhasish Bose, Tom Aldred, Alberto, Dippendu Biswas, and Ashish Rai into being the “great walls of India.”
Mohun Bagan have conceded the least goals per 90 minutes in the Indian Super League and have successfully kept 12 clean sheets out of the 20 games they've played. These stats prove that the team heavily relies on their strong defence.
The coach has developed players like Dippendu and Ashish into being amongst the most versatile defenders in the league. Fans are demanding the club to renew every defender’s contract after their spectacular performance this season.
Despite losing their best defender, Anwar Ali, to arch-rivals East Bengal FC last season, there appears to be no kind of adverse effect on the team at all.
MBSG will now aim to secure the ISL shield two times in a row and qualify for the ISL Cup final and the Super Cup.
