For a club that has spent much of its history battling simply to survive in the English top flight, Bournemouth’s arrival on the European stage is already a major achievement.

On Thursday, the Cherries’ remarkable journey reached yet another landmark as they secured their first ever win in their first ever competitive European appearance with a 2-1 victory over Spanish side Real Sociedad in San Sebastian.

Bournemouth had never played a competitive European fixture before this season.

Now, their first night in the UEFA Europa League has ended with three points against the Spaniards away from home, giving Marco Rose’s side a brilliant start to their campaign.

Justin Kluivert opened the scoring before Rayan doubled Bournemouth’s advantage inside the first 20 minutes, putting the Cherries firmly in control of the game.

Kluivert’s goal initially appeared to have been ruled out for offside before VAR intervened and awarded it, marking their first ever goal in a European competition.

Real Sociedad responded with a goal after the break, with Sergio Gómez pulling one back in the 57th minute for the home side.

The hosts applied pressure as Bournemouth were forced to defend their slender one-goal advantage, and goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic produced several important saves late on to ensure that the visitors returned home with all three points.
