Gulf United, the UAE's second-tier side, has officially announced Andres Iniesta as their new head coach, marking the midfield maestro's first job in football management. The Spain and FC Barcelona legend finished his playing career at Emirates Club, which is also based in the UAE, and his main goal now is to get Gulf United promoted to the UAE's top division.
"Joining Gulf United FC feels like the right place to begin this new chapter,” said Iniesta upon his arrival. (sic)
"Football has given me everything, and now I want to give something back through coaching, through learning, and through working every day with young players who have the hunger and the talent to go far.” (sic)
He added, "I believe in developing footballers the right way: with patience, with a clear idea of how the game should be played, and with genuine care for each individual. Gulf United shares that philosophy, and that is why I am here. I want to grow as a coach, gain real experience, and earn my Pro Licence.” (sic)
The 42-year-old retired in 2024 as one of the most decorated and celebrated football players of his generation. He was instrumental in developing Barcelona's golden generation under Pep Guardiola, winning four Champions League titles and nine La Liga titles with the Catalan giants. He also won two Euros with Spain and the World Cup trophy in 2010. In addition, Iniesta won the Japanese Super Cup and Emperor Cup with Vissel Kobe.
Although Iniesta previously stated that he was unsure about taking on a management role at the end of his career, he has found the ideal opportunity to test his managerial skills and potentially build his CV gradually at Gulf United. This club was founded in 2019 and finished 10th last season in the UAE First Division League, the second-tier league after the UAE Pro League. He hopes to secure promotion to the UAE Pro League with Gulf United next season.
The Spaniard currently holds an A coaching licence and is working towards a pro licence, and this position would allow him to gain valuable coaching experience. Iniesta shares Pep Guardiola's and Xavi's football philosophy, and he plans to replicate a similar Barça style of play in the Middle East. His Barcelona midfield partner had also grown as a coach in this region while serving as the head coach of Al-Sadd in Qatar's top division league.
For Gulf United, a club that's only a few years old, appointing Iniesta brings a lot of excitement for their future. Despite his lack of prior experience, he brings one of the most comprehensive football educations the game has ever produced, and all La Masia graduates are regarded as far more football-savvy than graduates from other academies. He learned from the best in the world while playing for Guardiola and Luis Enrique.
We can expect Gulf United to improve drastically, playing positional football with an emphasis on possession-based patient building up from the back. The club is also heavily focused on developing youth talent and fielding one of the UAE's youngest teams, which would be a perfect match for Iniesta, as young players pick up ideas quickly and have a lot of energy and ambition.
His arrival was also a financial move by the club, as few people were aware of them prior to Iniesta's arrival, but now all eyes will be on Gulf United as a result of the Spanish maestro.
