Joan Laporta has been re-elected as the president of FC Barcelona and will continue to lead the club for a further five years. He swept 68% of the votes to his favour as he is set to begin his second consecutive term and fourth term in this role from July 1, as announced by the La Liga champions. His competitor, Victory Font, could only muster around 30% of the votes, while the remaining 2% were void and invalid.

Having been elected as the president and taken office in March 2021, the Catalan stepped down last month as the club seeks the presidential election which takes place every five years. Laporta first led the club between the periods 2003-10, when the club went through one of the most glorious phases under Pep Guardiola, setting a new football culture in Europe.

As per reports, 48,500 votes were cast in the presidential election, with Laporta securing 32,934 votes in his favour. The Catalan giants have suffered a lot financially during the era of Joseph Bartomeu, but Laporta has recovered the club from that mess in recent years, pulling multiple financial levers and sacrifices which have ensured some success in recent years, such as even winning the domestic treble last season.

The 63-year-old seemed elated with the result following his victory; "It gives us great strength; it makes us unstoppable," he said. "No-one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead. They will be the best of our lives.” (sic)

He added, "This is a wonderful club, where the members elect their president and their board of directors. A club unique in the world, truly extraordinary.” (sic)

Following the victory, Laporta has pledged that he and his team will do everything to defend Barça against all odds and lead this club to great heights again. He has also promised to strengthen the first team and complete the renovation of the Camp Nou. The Catalan giants are looking the favourites to defend their La Liga title this year and will also host Newcastle on Wednesday in the second leg of the Champions League RO16 tie.

What does Joan Laporta’s victory mean for FC Barcelona?

FC Barcelona’s recent years have been rocked with financial crisis, instability with managers and failed sporting projects. The departure of Lionel Messi, financial debts to clubs and poor performances in the Champions League left the club in the middle of nowhere, but Joan Laporta showed the club some light. Therefore, his win carries huge significance for the future of the club but also carries the identity of the Catalans in the longer run.

On top of that, Laporta is not an unknown figure at the top; he has led the club during one of its most successful periods. During that period Barça transformed into one of the most acclaimed clubs in the world because of their modern tiki-taka style of football. Under his leadership, the club embraced its academy, La Masia, and developed a football culture which helps them grow players even to this day.

Fast forward to 2021, Laporta faced financial challenges within the club, and the previous administration had completely made a mess out of it. He had to stabilise the club's financial condition while also ensuring that the team was able to compete at the highest level. This required a lot of sacrifices to be made.

Barcelona had to reduce the wages of players and let go of younger talents, and they had to pull strategic financial levers to sign new players. Barcelona's new commercial partnership with Spotify was a masterstroke played by Laporta which helped in strengthening the club's long-term revenue. The 63-year-old managed the financial crisis while keeping the club's sporting ambition intact.

Following the arrival of Hansi Flick, Barcelona's sporting project represents a turning point from their recent turmoil. Under this era of Laporta, the club is slowly leading back to stability, competing in Europe and once again getting admired globally for their brand of football. However, the risk of financial instability in the near future remains. Laporta has made bold leadership decisions in the past and will hope to transform the club even further. The next five years will decide whether his return can lead to the formation of another golden era of FC Barcelona living up to the club's motto, ‘Mes que un club', which translates to ‘More than a club’.
