Chelsea's new number nine, Liam Delap, has opened up about his decision of snubbing Manchester United for the West Londoners in an intense transfer saga between the two Premier League giants.
It appears that former connections have influenced Delap's move from Ipswich Town to Chelsea, as the Italian mastermind Enzo Maresca was able to convince the talented English forward to join his ambitious project.
While it appears to be an exciting move for the Blues, Manchester United have surely missed out on a talented forward, having been in desperate search of a consistent goal-scoring striker this summer transfer window.
Why did Delap reject United?
As reported by United In Focus, Delap revealed the reasons behind his decision in a recent interview, stating, “It was a nice position to be in, but also there are a lot of decisions you have to make. You never know if it is going to be the right decision. You’ve just got to go with your gut and hopefully it works out”. (sic)
Further, he added, “There are so many factors that go into it. I’ve got a good relationship with the manager. I know how he plays. I’ve played in this system before. I know a lot of the players here and the project of the club, how they see the future. That’s what excited me." (sic)
From the above statements, it seems clear that Liam Delap loved Enzo Maresca's new project at Chelsea more than what Amorim's project at Manchester United offered him, as it also appears that the English forward believes that Maresca's system suits him quite well.
As a result, the 22-year-old Englishman completed the £30 million move to Stamford Bridge, whereas the Red Devils managed to get their hands on Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha, who was seen as an alternative for Delap.
