Serie A giants AS Roma are set to face a penalty for violating UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations and, therefore, have to pay an amount of compensation due to their breaches dating back to 2023.
As reported by multiple sources, the Rome-based club has failed to maintain their balance sheet properly, with some financial entries missing from the record, which was caught red-handed by UEFA. Roma could even be forced to make major sales in order to balance their accounts and avoid a harsher penalty.
Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport stated that AS Roma earned €17 million from sales during the financial year of 2023-24, which includes the departures of Nicola Zalewski to Inter Milan (€6.3m), Samuel Dahl to Benfica (€5.5m), and Le Fée to Championship side Sunderland (approx. €2m).
Another sale, which came in as a lifeline for Roma
Tammy Abraham's €20 million sale to Besiktas a few weeks ago came in as a lifeline for Roma, as more sales mean a lesser gap between UEFA's calculation and their financial records.
Abraham had joined the Serie A giants for a transfer fee of €40 million from Chelsea back in 2021, which was considered to be a hefty economic blow for the club, with some reports stating that Roma still haven't fully recovered from that ambitious buy.
However, Tammy Abraham's sale has improved the situation for Roma to a great extent, but it won't be enough to fill in the financial gap, which means that the Italians would still be required to pay a fine as compensation.
The penalty amount is reported to be just €3 million, which appears to be a very easy and hassle-free buyout for I Giallorossi, with a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport also stating, “Better a fine than selling off the players Gasperini likes”. (sic)
