Ecuador pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coming from behind to defeat four-time World Cup winners Germany 2-1 and securing their place in the knockout stages for the first time since 2006.

In a game where they had no choice but to win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, Sebastián Beccacece's team stunned a free-flowing German side, extending their fairytale run in the tournament.

After a disappointing start to the campaign, losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast before drawing 0-0 with Curacao, they needed three points to advance to the next round as one of the best third-placed teams. Faced a German side that had already qualified for the next round and had scored nine goals in their previous two games.

The odds were stacked against La Tri, but they accepted the challenge, and with sheer courage, resilience, and belief, they overcame the odds and wrote their name in history, becoming the country's first team to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

However, things were not easy for the South Americans. Germany took the lead just two minutes into the game when Florian Wirtz danced past the Ecuadorian crowd and found Leroy Sané, who fired past Hernan Galindez in goal.

Julian Nagelsmann's side hoped to dominate this game as well, claiming their third victory of the group stage. Ecuador responded with remarkable spirit, as Nilson Angulo hit a thunderous long-range strike past Manuel Neuer after only seven minutes to score their first World Cup goal.

This goal completely changed the game and injected new energy into the Ecuador players. They began to keep the ball and play more confidently, matching Germany's intensity. While Nagelsmann's side continued to dominate possession, Ecuador maintained incredible discipline and looked dangerous on the break.

Moises Caicedo dominated the midfield, while Ecuador's defence held firm against waves of German attacks. They maintained their intensity as the European giants pushed for a winner to keep their perfect group stage record. Ecuador, on the other hand, defended bravely and waited patiently for a chance.

The opportunity came late in the 77th minute from a corner kick. Kevin Rodriguez's flicked header found Gonzalo Plata, who reacted quickly and poked the ball past Neuer, who should've seen it sooner given his high standards. The Ecuadorian camp erupted in celebration as the crowd witnessed one of the most significant goals in the country's history, propelling them to their first knockout round in the World Cup.

Plata's quick reaction completed the remarkable "remontada," putting them on the verge of history. Beccacece couldn't contain his excitement as he dashed towards the stands to celebrate with the fans.

Ecuador's Argentine coach Beccacece hailed the victory as the biggest in the country's history, and he attributed it to belief and hope after a difficult start to the World Cup. They entered the tournament as one of the dark horses, but many dismissed them after their first two games. This is a message to the rest of the competitors, who have demonstrated that they will not surrender.

For Germany, it won't matter much because they've already won the group and qualified, but Nagelsmann must improve the team's defensive woes. As things stand, Germany will play Paraguay in the next round, while Ecuador will face the hosts, Mexico.
