Julian Alvarez's “love affair” with FC Barcelona: A transfer saga that has taken the ugliest of turns

FC Barcelona have been interested in signing Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez for a few months now and are one of the most talked about transfer sagas of the summer.

However, Atletico Madrid have made it very clear that they have no intention of letting the Argentine leave.

With Robert Lewandowski leaving the club after last season and Ferran Torres close to leaving, Alvarez has emerged as one of the options to fill the void in the attack. 

Barcelona intensified their pursuit for Alvarez after the World Cup, and as per the reports, the player himself seeks a move to the Catalan giants this summer.

The 26-year-old is attracted to the possibility of playing for Barcelona, but Atletico have clearly tagged him as an untouchable player. Atletico boss Diego Simeone has also stated that the club will stay firm in its decision despite the player's interest.

Now, tensions between Julian Alvarez and Atletico Madrid are rising, with the forward desperate to secure a move to Barça before the transfer window closes.

Atletico’s stand is understandable. Alvarez has only joined the club in 2024 from Manchester City in a deal worth up to €95 million, signing a six-year contract. He is a central part of Simeone's project and has played a key role in the last two seasons.

Alvarez scored 10 goals in the Champions League last season, setting a club record. He also became the quickest South American to reach 25 Champions League goals, doing it in just 41 appearances.

Therefore, for Atletico, losing Alvarez won't just be losing another player; it would mean losing one of the pillars of the project. The Rojiblancos also reportedly filed a complaint to FIFA alleging that Barcelona are trying unlawful methods to lure Alvarez.

Now the player himself is at the centre of all attraction. He has publicly expressed his desire to leave the club during the World Cup as well. Atleti have refused Barça’s initial bid of €100 million for the forward and even issued a complaint to the Royal Football Federation.

The Argentine joined the squad on Monday, and as per reports, the tensions grew worse. Alvarez lost his temper and urged Atletico to count himself out. The 26-year-old is ready to force a move to Barcelona and is prepared to go all out.

However, the club has still made it clear that they expect him to play for them next season. Alvarez is a perfect fit for Barcelona, who is one of the most versatile forwards in football right now, and this could make him one of the very best in the world alongside Lamine Yamal and other talented players.

Barça are also ready to offer up to €120 million for the player, and it's up to the player to convince Atletico to negotiate over an exit.

The biggest obstacle is Alvarez's contract that runs until 2030, which gives Atletico Madrid complete leverage over this situation. For both the player and Barcelona, this transfer move is a priority while Atletico are trying to keep one of their most valuable players.

With the transfer window approaching its final stages, it's not about Barcelona convincing their rivals to sell Alvarez; it's more on the player now to convince the club to let him leave on good terms and find his replacement with his transfer fee.
