The football community mourns the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel after a fatal on-field collision

The whole football world is in mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died aged 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision during a La Liga Segunda division match against FC Andorra.
The tragic incident occurred deep into stoppage time, with the match level at 2-2, and De Miguel was challenging for a long ball near midfield when FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his area in an attempt to clear it.
The two players collided heavily, with Owono shown a straight red card for violent conduct.
De Miguel initially received treatment on the pitch before being rushed to the nearby hospital by ambulance.
As per the reports, he had suffered cardiac arrest following the collision, and despite the emergency treatment, he sadly passed away on Tuesday.
The game had been abandoned after this incident. Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances leading to the player's tragic death.
The authorities stated that such investigations are routine when a death results from an accident or other non-natural cause and the actual cause always has to be investigated.
As per reports, criminal proceedings against Owono are considered unlikely, given that the collision occurred during the course of play and it was totally accidental.
The precise medical cause of De Miguel’s death has not yet been publicly disclosed to avoid the spreading of conspiracy theories and rumours.
The tragedy has seen an outpouring of grief across the football community. Tenerife described the club as “heartbroken”, while FC Andorra, La Liga, the Spanish Football Federation and clubs across the country paid tribute to the striker, including Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
All the UEFA Champions League games observed a minute's silence before the game to pay tribute. Raphinha also scored and pointed out Miguel’s jersey number with his fingers to pay his tribute.
The Spanish federation has postponed scheduled games following his death, as Tenerife declared six days of mourning and suspended activities across several of its teams.
Born in Madrid, De Miguel had played for several Spanish clubs during his career before joining Tenerife in 2025. He became an important figure for the club and was instrumental in their promotion to the second division.
What began as a routine football match ended in unimaginable tragedy, and as investigations continue, today football mourns one of their very own whose life was devastatingly cut short.
