Cristiano Ronaldo responded perfectly to all of his critics as Portugal defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in their second group game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese captain had faced harsh criticism after the disappointing draw against DR Congo in the first game, but he reminded everyone why he is still one of the game's greatest goal scorers by scoring a brace in a one-sided display that put Portugal's World Cup campaign back on track.
The pressure on Roberto Martinez's Portugal had begun to build before this game, as their 1-1 draw with Congo made this a must-win game. Furthermore, Ronaldo's performance in the previous game sparked debate among pundits and many fans.
Questions were raised about whether the 41-year-old could still lead his country at the highest levels. However, in true CR7 fashion, he responded emphatically.
Portugal began the game with far more urgency than they had demonstrated in their previous game. They controlled possession, pressed hard, and pinned Uzbekistan inside their own box. While the midfield dictated tempo, the wingers and full-backs constantly stretched the Uzbek defence, resulting in their first goal.
Portugal's intricate passing carved open the Uzbek defence, with Joao Cancelo finding Ronaldo in the box, who was perfectly positioned to score his first World Cup goal. The goal was a huge boost to the team's confidence, and they looked completely different than they did against Congo.
Uzbekistan lost morale after conceding the first goal and struggled to deal with Portugal's attacking movements, which repeatedly exploited the gaps in the Uzbek defence. Portugal attacked with intent, and Nuno Mendes scored the second goal with a thunderous free-kick.
Just before halftime, Ronaldo completed his brace by timing his run perfectly, rolling back the years and producing a trademark finish beyond the goalkeeper's reach. After scoring his second goal, he performed the "Calma" celebration, which sent a clear message to everyone who had criticised him following the DR Congo match.
Ronaldo, 41, continues to face criticism despite accomplishing something only a few players in football history have done. Every missed opportunity and quiet performance, like the one against Congo, becomes a headline and a topic of debate.
Nonetheless, he has spent nearly a decade proving his doubters wrong, and this performance felt like another one of them, as everyone had completely written him off and even suggested he retire.
While the pundits questioned his place in the starting lineup, he responded in his native language, that of scoring goals. In his sixth World Cup appearance, he has scored in every edition of the tournament, cementing his legacy even further.
Despite leading 3-0 at halftime, Portugal maintained their dominance in the second half with the same intensity. Instead of defending their lead, Martinez's team pushed forward, completely overwhelming Uzbekistan.
Fabio Cannavaro's team is known for its defensive resilience, but Portugal's high-intensity pressure throughout the game completely destroyed Uzbekistan's defensive structure.
The fourth goal dashed any hopes of a comeback, and the game became one-sided. Raphael Leao added a fifth, demonstrating Portugal's depth and proving why they are one of the favourites this time.
This victory could be a watershed moment for Portugal, as it not only rekindled their qualification hopes, but it also restored all of their momentum. Most importantly, it demonstrated Cristiano Ronaldo's importance to the team even today.
As the knockout stages approach, the 41-year-old has demonstrated why writing him off is still one of the most serious mistakes in football. Ronaldo also became Portugal's all-time leading World Cup scorer with ten goals, surpassing the legendary Eusébio.
