Manchester City signs Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a blockbuster deadline-day transfer

Manchester City have signed Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentine set to make the switch to the lighter shade of blue in a deal worth £125 million.

The agreement has been reached on the deadline day of the summer transfer window, matching the British transfer record previously set by Liverpool for Alexander Isak.

This transfer brings an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the 25-year-old’s future at Chelsea.

Man City had been monitoring Fernandez throughout the summer before stepping up just before the deadline day.

After initial negotiations, Chelsea were reluctant to sell Enzo, but the two clubs ultimately reached an agreement for a record-breaking transfer fee.

Fernandez leaves Stamford Bridge after arriving from Benfica in 2023 in a deal worth around £107 million, which at that time was a British record transfer fee.

The 25-year-old cemented himself as one of the most important midfielders in Chelsea, especially with his ability to dictate the play from deep, progressive passing and ability to provide a threat up front.

Last season he was impressive, scoring 15 goals and providing 7 assists, while also playing an important role in Argentina's World Cup campaign. 

This move also reunites Enzo Fernandez with Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea and is now Man City’s new boss.

Maresca's familiarity with Enzo could help the player transition into City's system quickly. The midfielder’s versatility should also allow him to operate as a deep playmaker and push forward when required.

For Manchester City, this signing is a statement of intent as they want to reshape their squad after finishing second last season.

This transfer deal takes their summer spending closer to around £400 million, which just shows how much they've invested in rebuilding.

For Chelsea, this is a significant loss, but the transfer value they've received is huge. Fernandez had become an important player in the squad, and his exit means that now they've to replace him.

The Blues tried to sign potential replacements before the deadline like Lamine Camara and Manu Koné, but securing a replacement was difficult with limited time remaining.

The £125 million deal also makes Fernandez the first player to be transferred for more than £100 million on two separate transfers, having previously joined Chelsea from Benfica in a British record fee.

Manchester City have now pulled off one of the biggest transfers of 2026 on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

He has Premier League experience and a World Cup winner's medal, and he's proven himself at the highest level.

City will hope that he'll further improve from his time at Chelsea and become a key in their pursuit of further glory as the club has begun a new era under Maresca.
