Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in England, has gone through a lot of turmoil since winning the Champions League back in 2021. They've gone through change in ownership and in management as well.
After a long time, the Blues were looking stable under Enzo Maresca, winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. The London giants were also in firm contention to finish top four this season until November, and the performances in the Champions League were impressive, which included a 3-0 thrashing of European giants FC Barcelona.
As per reports, Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior is the top candidate to replace Enzo Maresca at Chelsea. The French club is partially owned by the BlueCo group, the owners of the London giants.
Todd Boehly and co. are impressed by the 41-year-old and are keen on bringing someone who is familiar with their corporate affairs, after Maresca fell out with the hierarchy.
Rosenior’s Strasbourg side is doing quite well in Ligue 1, and with such a young and inexperienced squad, he has got his team fighting for the top six in the league. He has managed 62 games for the French club, boasting a win percentage of 50%, with 31 wins, 14 draws and 7 losses.
Chelsea appointing Liam Rosenior is a huge gamble for their sporting project, but why?
Chelsea seemed to be heading in the right direction under Enzo Maresca, but everything has fallen apart right now. The appointment of Liam Rosenior is a huge gamble yet again and could be the repeat of Graham Potter.
Nothing to take away from Rosenior; he has done an excellent job with a young team at Strasbourg, and his style of football is impressive as well, but is it enough to take the leap to such a big European giant like Chelsea?
The 41-year-old has no experience of the Premier League and had been sacked by Championship side Hull City after just 18 months in charge. Stability has been a huge weakness for Chelsea for the past few years, and the appointment of the Englishman doesn't solve it.
Another narrative that has surfaced is that Todd Boehly and co. have shared the same corporate network with Rosenior and would prefer having someone as their ‘puppet manager’, ultimately giving the ownership full control of the club's squad building and sporting decisions.
Enzo Maresca wanted to assert his dominance as a manager in tactical and squad-building decisions, and rightly so, but he was prevented by the owners, and it ultimately led to his departure.
On top of everything, the fans are furious at the club ownership for letting Maresca leave, and that would generate huge mental pressure on a young manager like Rosenior.
The 41-year-old is a great tactician and is doing a brilliant job, but appointing him at this hour when the club needs stability would be a huge gamble, and the odds are in favour of a big failure of Todd Boehly’s sporting project at Stamford Bridge.
