Manchester City have concluded their business in the winter transfer window by completing another major signing in the hopes of trying to revive their season.
As per Fabrizio Romano, City’s latest signing comes in the form of Nico González, who is set to join the reigning Premier League champions on a permanent move from Porto.
A deal worth €60 million is reported to have been agreed to by both clubs, which is the same as the Spanish midfielder’s release clause.
González will fly out to Manchester today in order to complete his medical and is expected to sign all the documents within the next two days in order to be announced as Manchester City’s latest signing.
Who is Manchester City’s latest signing?
Nicolás González Iglesias is a 23-year-old defensive midfielder who had played for Valencia and FC Barcelona before joining Porto in the summer of 2023.
The Spaniard has come through the special academy system of La Masia, which hints at the incredible talent that the 23-year-old possesses. While he did not get regular chances in Barcelona’s senior team, he was able to showcase his talent after his permanent transfer to Porto.

Having a decent debut season, where he managed to establish his presence in the team, Nico González has become a crucial part of the Portuguese giants’ team, playing an important role in their midfield this season.
Despite being a defensive midfielder, the Spaniard has registered 7 goals and 6 assists in just 29 appearances across all competitions this season, which includes a goal and 2 assists in 8 games in the UEFA Europa League as well, according to stats provided by Transfermarkt.com.
González's signing will come as a major boost for Pep Guardiola’s struggling midfield, whose vulnerabilities have been one of the main reasons for Manchester City’s shocking downfall this season.
His similarities in the playing style to Manchester City’s priceless asset, Rodri, appear to be the main reason why the English giants have decided to go big for him.
With Rodri still injured, along with Mateo Kovacic’s struggles, Nico González is expected to jump straight into Pep’s starting XI, with the hopes that he will be able to fill the void that City’s Ballon d’Or winner has left in the DM role.
