Defending La Liga champions FC Barcelona have now officially withdrawn themselves from the Super League, leaving behind Real Madrid as the only remaining founding club of the breakaway league that never took place.

Barcelona, alongside Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, was amongst the Spanish clubs that had signed up for the Super League project back in 2021. Six Premier League clubs had also signed up for the European Super League, but they had withdrawn themselves within the next two days after huge backlash from the fans.

Juventus were the latest club to withdraw themselves after rivals Inter Milan in 2024, leaving behind El Clasico rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona as the only founding clubs of the Super League.

Barça president Joan Laporta had stated that the Catalan club wanted to improve relations with UEFA and join the European Football Clubs after being expelled from it after joining the Super League. All the clubs which had previously quit the Super League project have been welcomed back to the EFC.

“FC Barcelona hereby announces that today it has formally notified the European Super League Company and the clubs involved of its withdrawal from the European Super League project,” said FC Barcelona's official statement released on 7th February.

Real Madrid are the only club that remains in the Super League, and the whole idea of breaking away from UEFA and conducting a separate league has become a complete failure. The Spanish giants have appealed to the court against UEFA, demanding substantial damages.

As per reports, the Los Blancos have suffered losses around €5 billion as they failed to launch the European Super League. The club has filed a court case to seek compensation for these losses from UEFA.
