FC Barcelona have decided to part ways with Robert Lewandowski next summer when his contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.

As reported by the Athletic, the Catalan giants have voted against the renewal of the Polish striker, which means he will leave the club as a free agent.

Lewandowski is 37 years old but is still comfortably one of the best players in the Barça squad. He had been the top scorer for the Catalans last season with 42 goals in just 52 appearances in all competitions.

However, given his age, high wages and a formidable decrease in pressing prowess, it seems to be a reasonable reason to let him go. It would also give the club an opportunity to find a younger no. 9 for the long-term vision.

The Polish striker's wages could also free up a lot of money, which could be further used to fix other flaws in the squad. Barcelona must make sure that they are able to find the perfect replacement for Lewandowski, as unless they sign a proven striker, it would become a mammoth task for someone new to fill in Lewa’s boots at Barça.

Hansi Flick prefers a dynamic attack, and having a youth setup for the future would be great for the vision ahead, but finding the perfect replacement for a player of Lewandowski's quality is the most important piece of the puzzle in the transition period.

A 'bitter ending' at last? FC Barcelona consider letting Ronald Araujo leave

FC Barcelona are also looking to potentially offload Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo, the skipper of the club, next season, as Hansi Flick has urged the board to strengthen the defence alongside the attack.

Barça have faced defensive issues this season for not replacing Inigo Martinez, who had been the best defender for the club last season. The club desperately seeks a left-footed centre-back to partner with Pau Cubarsi at the back to reignite his confidence as well.

Flick admires Nico Schlotterbeck and considers him his top priority as a signing next summer. Therefore, it might pave the way for Araujo leaving his boyhood club next summer, in a somewhat bitter ending.

The Catalan giants might also look to let Marc Casado and Marcus Rashford leave as well to free up wages and strengthen the squad further. Barça have an option to buy the Englishman but might prefer investing in younger players like Malick Fofana and Antonio Nusa.

With Lewandowski's departure imminent next summer, the club might gear up for a big squad overhaul to secure the future of the club.
