Burnley have agreed on a deal with Chelsea to sign the “failed Cobham graduate” Armando Broja, who had been tipped to become the Blues' first choice no.9 a few seasons ago. The Blues are set to receive £20 million for their young academy graduate, who will finally depart the club after a series of loan spells elsewhere.
Chelsea are offloading their "deadwood" players this summer to acquire new signings, while balancing their PSR financial guidelines. The World champions have already added Liam Delap, Jamie Bynoe Gittens, Joao Pedro and are closing in on a deal for Xavi Simons, in order to compete in the Premier League with rivals Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City.
The club have now successfully offloaded Noni Madueke, Joao Felix and now even Armando Broja, on mutual understanding as these players seek regular game time.
Broja's departure in particular appears to be a sad one for the fans as the 23-year-oldwas once being tipped to become the next big thing for Chelsea, having risen through the ranks of the Blues' academy system, stunning performances at each playing level.
Broja also impressed during his loan spell at Southampton in the 2021/22, where he bagged 9 goals and an assist in 38 Premier League appearances, which convinced Chelsea to keep him the following season and make him a part of the first time.
The 23-year-old did show glimpses of his talent during the later stages of the 2022/23 season and in the early stages of the 2023/24 season. However, he failed to make a solid, consistent impact in the first team, and has even struggled with injuries on a consistent basis.
His loan spell at Everton last season also failed dramatically, which left Chelsea with no choice than to let go off him permanently this summer, as the management were reported to be "very unconvinced" by his past performances.
His sale to Burnley would generate a “full profit” for Chelsea, as per the PSR guidelines, as he is product of the club's academy, meaning no amount was spent in his acquisition, making the deal a very lucrative one for the Blues.
