Real Madrid are reportedly working on signing William Saliba from Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has produced stellar performances for the Gunners, which has made him a major target for top clubs across Europe.

As per reports by RMC Sport, the Los Blancos have made it their “absolute priority” to strengthen their defence next season.

Eder Militao and mainly David Alaba's struggles with prolonged injuries have prompted Madrid to go for a strong centre-back, with Saliba appearing as the perfect fit for their squad.

Real Madrid also dream of signing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alphonso Davies in the summer to complete their rebuild and the dream of forming a new Galácticos team.

However, with Davies signing a new contract with Bayern and some reports claiming that Trent is also set to pen a new deal with Liverpool, Madrid have been given major setbacks in their pursuits.

Signing Saliba will also be a very difficult task for the Spanish giants, as Arsenal have made it very clear that their star defender is deemed “untouchable.”.

The new era of the Galácticos

Real Madrid have built a super team this season, having the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo in the same team.

Adding players like Trent, Davies, and Saliba would create an ultimate star-studded lineup, reminding the fans of the iconic Galácticos team during the early 2000s.

However, the performance of these new Galácticos hasn’t been on par with their high standards and expectations.

There have been times when Real have looked lost on the pitch, as a result of which many pundits and experts have pointed out the lack of cohesion and chemistry in the newly assembled team.

Apart from that, defensive vulnerabilities have appeared to be one of the main reasons that have cost Real Madrid this season, as a result of which the club is desperately targeting reinforcements in the summer.

What's next for Real Madrid?

February marks the beginning of an extremely crucial month for Real Madrid, which could define the remainder of their season.

Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid tonight at the Bernabeu in what could possibly be the most intense Madrid Derby that the fans have witnessed in the recent years, with just a point separating the two sides.

While Madrid are currently on top of the league table, archrivals FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are hanging on their tail, applying serious pressure, because of which the reigning La Liga and Champions League winners need to maintain consistency to ensure that the new Galácticos live up to the expectations and the legacy of Real Madrid.

Real will also face Manchester City over the course of two legs in the knockout stage play-offs of the UEFA Champions League to try and fight for a place in the Round of 16 of the UCL.
