Cristiano Ronaldo has carried Portugal on his shoulders for years, but that is no longer the case. The Seleção das Quinas is a top contender for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with one of their strongest squads ever. They are stacked with world-class talent in every position, a mix of youth and experience, and they have now embraced the winning mentality developed after winning the UEFA Nations League.

Portugal has produced some of the best football players and won the Euro Cup, but the World Cup has always eluded them. Their best campaign came in 1966, when the legendary Eusebio led them to third place. With Cristiano Ronaldo returning to football's biggest stage for the final time, he has set his sights on the sport's most coveted prize.

What was once a one-man team has evolved into a perfectly balanced roster capable of competing with the best teams in the world. As the tournament approaches, many consider them the favourites, owing to the abundance of talent, squad depth, and experience required to summit the World Cup mountain for the first time in their history.

Strengths:

Squad Depth

Only a few teams in the world can match Portugal's squad depth. Roberto Martinez has elite options in every position, including defence, midfield, and attack. Only injuries can derail Portugal's campaign, which is becoming less likely given that they have one of the strongest benches at the World Cup.

Midfield

Portugal's midfield is among the best in the world right now. With Bruno Fernandes' creativity in the centre of the park, alongside serial winners Vitinha and Joao Neves. Vitinha dominates the game like no one else, and Joao Neves is one of the most technically gifted players with an excellent defensive work rate, making them legitimate contenders.

Not Dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo

Unlike previous editions, Portugal no longer relies on Cristiano Ronaldo. Bruno Fernandes can create opportunities alongside Vitinha, and the wing has options with Raphael Leão, João Félix, and Bernardo Silva, who can control tempo. Furthermore, even at the young age of 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is decisive and capable of deciding matches on his own.

Weaknesses:

Defence

Portugal has quality defenders, but they have frequently demonstrated lapses in concentration, which have cost them several matches against strong teams. In the knockout stages, a single mistake can be fatal. To win, the Seleção das Quinas must focus on defence for the entire 90 minutes.

Pressure

Portugal is no longer the underdog, and for the first time in history, they may be genuine World Cup contenders. This undoubtedly puts pressure on the players who have never been to this stage before, and dealing with such pressure will be critical if they are to win football's most prestigious prize.

Roberto Martinez: The Big Question Mark

Portugal has one of the tournament's most talented squads, as did Belgium's golden generation under Roberto Martinez in 2018. The question remains whether Martinez is capable of leading them to success. Martinez is an experienced coach, but throughout his career he has been bashed for his tactical rigidity in big games and failing with golden generations. His time in Belgium is the best example, as despite having players like Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois, and Vincent Kompany, Belgium failed to reach a single final.

World Cup 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo's final chance to lift the trophy his heart desires the most

Cristiano Ronaldo has won nearly every major trophy available to him, but the World Cup remains out of reach. At 41, Ronaldo is no longer the explosive player he once was, but he has gradually evolved into a box striker capable of delivering in crucial moments. He has carried the nation on his shoulders for years; now it is time for the young golden generation to carry him to a common goal.

Ronaldo instills confidence and inspires his teammates. His mentality, professionalism, and desire to win have become an integral part of Portugal's identity, and all of the squad's young players have grown up idolising him. As a result, his mere presence boosts all of the players' confidence significantly.

Verdict

Now that the team can handle themselves, this could be their greatest strength this time. My opinion is that Portugal is a legitimate contender for the World Cup this time around, and they have all of the ingredients to prepare whatever dish they want. However, it will all come down to their ability to perform under pressure, which they have previously failed at. For Ronaldo, the final dance will be to lift the only trophy missing from his cabinet.
