Manchester United are going through what could be their toughest time as they continue to experience new lows this season, despite the change of face in the managerial position.

Following their 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Red Devils now find themselves in 13th place, being 24 points behind league leaders and their arch-rivals Liverpool, while also being within a distance of just 10 points from the relegation zone.

United’s disappointing start to the season under former manager Erik Ten Hag led to the sacking of the Dutch manager, who had entered into his 3rd season being in charge of the club.

While Ten Hag did lead United to 2 trophies in the last two seasons, the club’s management, led by majority stake owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, decided in November that a change was imminent in order to get Man Utd. back on track.

The turnover saw the former Sporting Lisbon manager, Ruben Amorim, take charge of what could be considered one of the most dreaded jobs in the footballing world today.

Ruben Amorim’s stint at Manchester United so far

Ruben Amorim was announced as the new Manchester United manager on 1st November, 2024, following his brilliant stint at Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese manager’s success with Sporting, which included 5 trophies, earned him the chance of becoming the next potential manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world..

The Portuguese, who was happy and settled at Sporting, decided to step out of his comfort zone and take on a new challenge in his career. However, it seems like Amorim was not able to accurately anticipate the massive hardships of the new challenge that he was about to take on.

Since taking charge of United in his 1st game just 2 months ago, Ruben Amorim has gone through one hell of a ride, an absolute emotional rollercoaster. In his 15 games in charge across all competitions, United have managed to win just 5, highlighting the difficulties that the Portuguese manager has already faced in a short period of time.

While there have been moments of spark, namely the late derby win vs Manchester City, the fighting draw against Liverpool at Anfield, and the tenacious win vs Arsenal in the FA Cup, Amorim’s team still continues to head into a direction where there is even more agony.

An arduous start leads to Amorim unleashing his wrath

The recent run of results has been majorly distressful for the 39-year-old manager. In the last 8 games across all competitions, United have managed to win just 1 game, while picking up 5 losses and 2 draws.

It seemed like only a matter of time before there was pandemonium, and the Brighton defeat did just that. Ruben Amorim’s wrath was set free.

In a fiery post-match press conference, Amorim fired brutal shots at his team, emphasizing the extremely poor condition of the team. According to CNN, Amorim said, “Imagine what this is (like) for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is (like) for me,”(sic) while speaking to the press.

He further added, “We are getting a new coach that is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that. I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. Because I’m not naive, and I know that we need to survive now."(sic)

He then landed the biggest blow of them all by saying, “We are being the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United. I know that you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go, your headlines.”(sic)

It was reported by The Athletic that Amorim carried his anger even to the dressing room, causing damage to the big TV screen in Manchester United’s dressing room, as he let his emotions loose while criticizing his players after the loss on Sunday.

The aftermath of the recent results has also resulted in Amorim beginning to take harsh decisions in order to transform and rebuild the squad according to his likings, with the club owners expected to back him.

The Portuguese manager has reportedly informed the club that 5 players, namely Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Christian Eriksen, do not fit in his plans going forward. As a result, Manchester United have already started exploring potential deals for these players to leave the club before the start of the next season.
