FIFA is set to increase the prize money of the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico after the participating countries have complained about the excessive costs. As per the reports, both the prize money and the participation fee will be hiked to ensure that the tournament is a commercial success. The global governing body of football is set to announce this decision soon.
The World Cup is set to be held for the first time in a new format with 48 teams participating in it, unlike the 32 teams in the previous editions. Therefore, it has also raised the revenue generation, as the number of games will be almost double. On the other hand, football fans have slammed FIFA, as the match tickets have become way too expensive while lodging and accommodation costs are also rising due to high demand, whereas teams will benefit from higher payments.
As compared to the previous editions of the tournament, the ticket prices are almost double this time, which has resulted in heavy criticism of the host nation, who promised a great spectacle this summer. On top of that, citizens of certain participating nations are banned from entering the US, which would result in them playing without their home support. This has sparked massive outrage against the United States and FIFA over the direction in which the sport is heading in the future.
The current prize pool for the tournament is around a record 727 million USD. Each participating nation will receive an amount from FIFA, and the winners will be receiving a humongous amount. With the revenue increasing to almost 11 billion USD, the governing body is set to raise the figures even further to satisfy the sponsors and the teams. The new format has played a massive role in the competition’s economic growth, and the aim is to promote the sport worldwide with the money that'll be generated from the tournament.
Football is no longer for fans! Is the World Cup FIFA's money machine? Fans are upset about ticket prices.
FIFA has decided to increase the prize pool for the participating teams at the World Cup, but the fans are frustrated over the tournament’s hosting. Travel expenses, restrictions and ticket prices are massive in the United States of America; that is not sustainable for middle-class football lovers.
As per reports, during the time of the World Cup, even short train journeys to the stadiums could cost over 100 USD per person, whereas it was completely the opposite in Qatar last time, where the government had reduced the ticket prices and increased metro railway connectivity to ensure the fans get a smooth experience. Ticket prices have also skyrocketed, and the resale value of the tickets for the final are being listed at excessive rates which only a few fans would be able to afford.
In previous editions of the World Cup, fans even got access to free transport and lodging with tickets. The tickets were affordable, due to which we saw fully packed stadiums with fans flocking in from all over the world. Now all these benefits are gone, and the tournament seems like a money-making machine for FIFA and the US government.
FIFA has argued that the excessive money will be used for the benefit and promotion of the sport, but this makes no sense for the travelling fans. Football has always been a sport for the fans, and without them the game is dead. Due to such excessive costs, plenty of hardcore fan groups have decided to watch the games from their homes, and it reflects the difference between the revenue generated and the fans' experience, which is already so negative.
