Borussia Dortmund have just announced the sacking of their manager and head coach, Nuri Sahin. The decision comes just a few hours after Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League last night.

In an official statement on the club’s website, Dortmund’s sporting director Lars Ricken stated, “We greatly value Nuri Sahin and his work; we wanted to work together for a long time and hoped until the end that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.”

He further said, “However, after four defeats in a row, with only one win from the last nine games and in 10th place in the Bundesliga table at present, we have unfortunately lost faith that we can still achieve our sporting objectives in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally too, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Dortmund’s terrible performance has led to the sacking of Sahin

The decision comes on the back of Dortmund’s terrible performance in the new campaign, which had been indicating that this decision was inevitable.

The departure of Terzic right before the start of the new season came as a big shock to the fans, as he had led the club to the final of the UEFA Champions League just a few months before his exit.

Dortmund have been miserable ever since. Everyone knew finding Terzic’s replacement would be a difficult task for the club as the German left a significant mark at the club, acting in multiple roles since his arrival 7 years ago.

Nuri Sahin, who was appointed as Terzic’s replacement, never appeared to be settled in his new role. Dortmund’s turbulent start to the new campaign, which was ignored by fans at first due to the initial period of his managerial reign, continued even in the second half of the campaign, which eventually led to his sacking.

BVB’s difficult start to the season has led them to be placed at the 10th spot in the Bundesliga currently, being 7 points away from the top 4, which is their worst position in the points table during this time of the campaign in any season over the last decade.

Along with their poor performance in the Bundesliga, Dortmund also stand at 13th place in the UEFA Champions League, currently standing 1 point away from the automatic qualification zone.

Things got even worse for Nuri Sahin since the beginning of the new year, with his team failing to win even a single game in 2025 so far, having played 4 games in all competitions.

Dortmund have identified the former United manager as the top candidate to replace Sahin

According to reports by LiveScore, Borussia Dortmund have identified Erik Ten Hag as Nuri Sahin’s replacement following his sacking. The former Manchester United manager, who has been without a club since November, is also reported to be very keen on taking the job.

As per reports, the Dutch manager is a close friend of Dortmund’s club director, Lars Ricken, and was even in attendance for BVB’s clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Ten Hag's presence during the game sparked rumours regarding the possibility of him being Dortmund’s next head coach.

Ten Hag is expected to be good replacement for Dortmund, as the Dutch manager already has experience of being involved in a managerial role in the Bundesliga. The 54-year-old was Pep Guardiola’s assistant coach during the Spaniard’s time with the German giants.

Therefore, it will be fair to give shouts to Ten Hag for being a great managerial candidate for Dortmund, due to the learnings and experiences he would have gained from a genius like Pep Guardiola.

As per Goal, Dortmund are expected to announce their new manager in the next 2 days. While Ten Hag remains a favourable candidate for the job, BVB are reportedly also considering the German National Team’s current assistant manager, Sandro Wagner, and even Stuttgart’s manager and head coach, Sebastian Hoeness.
