Aston Villa, who were not far from being relegated a few seasons back, have redeemed themselves and clinched the UEFA Europa League against a brave Freiburg side, their first European trophy since 1982 and first major trophy since 1996. The Villans once dominated English football, but since that European triumph, years of financial instability and sporting mediocrity led them to years of heartbreak and pain.
On a magical night in Istanbul, Aston Villa hammered Freiburg 3-0 and clinched their first Europa League title. The credit for this remarkable Villa redemption has to go to Unai Emery, who has made the Europa League his own competition. No other manager in football has won this competition more than Emery. This win cemented the Spanish coach as one of the best European competition specialist managers.
Aston Villa were the better team right from the start, and they made it look too easy. Unai Emery’s side dominated possession in the first half and were organised, and in transitions they were a complete nightmare for the German side. Former Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans gave Villa the lead with a thunderbolt of a strike before Emi Buendia doubled their advantage. Morgan Rogers bagged the third and sealed the win for the Premier League side.
As the full-time whistle blew, the travelling Aston Villa supporters were in the promised land, and they turned Istanbul into a sea of claret and blue, cherishing a moment they could not have for so many years. Prince William of the British royal family, who has been a lifelong supporter of the club, was in tears after the final whistle as it marked the end of the club's long wait to achieve success.

“Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware! With this manager in charge, anything is possible,” posted Prince William on his X account.
Ten years back, Aston Villa were relegated from the Premier League. However, in 2019 they crawled their way back to the Premier League through the Championship playoffs, but after getting promoted they were content with just avoiding relegation, which is not the standard for a club which was a giant in English football once.
The club's fortunes changed when they announced Unai Emery in 2022, who has transformed this team into what it is now. From securing top four finishes and qualifying to the Champions League to winning the Europa League, the Spanish international has become a demigod for all those loyal Villa supporters who waited 30 years for a major trophy and 44 years for a European trophy.
It was an emotional moment for skipper John McGinn, who's one of the players to go through the club's journey from the bottom to the top. He has been with the club since their championship era, and now he's lifted the club's first trophy in 30 years to complete the cycle of redemption. Villa, who were once relegation contenders, are now genuine contenders for more silverware next season onwards.

Argentina's World Cup-winning goalie Emiliano Martínez also became a hero of the club. The 32-year-old was criticised by the local fans when it was rumoured that he would leave for Manchester United. However, the Argentine stayed and played a pivotal role in the club's success. He played the final with a broken finger which he suffered during the warm-up, and despite the injury, he pulled off a sensational performance, proving why he's one of the very best goalkeepers in the world.
“We put in a shift, a top performance; we had a great season, and to top it off with this, it’s amazing,” said Tielemans in a post-match interview. (sic)
He added, “We only had one day to practise it; we did it on Monday, and it worked brilliantly tonight. So happy. Like I said, it’s amazing. It’s been a season with a lot of ups and downs. We started so-so badly; our standards were really poor. The way we turned things around was great. Credit to the players, credit to the staff. We just kept working and kept believing, and we got the win in the end. Champions League next season and a trophy.” (sic)
Morgan Rogers also dedicated this win to all the fans of the club who have been waiting for this day for so many years. The English forward loved the celebrations as the final whistle blew and led to a wave of claret and blue. He said, "It's hard to put into words; we’ve worked so hard for this.” (sic)
He added, “We knew we had one more game to give it our all, and we all delivered; we came through. Great moment for the fans, great moment for the club. It will go down in history; it’s a great moment.” (sic)
