Midfielders are often known as the heartbeat of football, and even with the game evolving over the years, midfield has always been the point of difference in football games.

The best midfielders in the world do not just pass well or shield the defence but also set the tempo of the game and dictate the game, and the whole team depends upon them for both attacking and defending.

The midfield of a team serves as the bridge between the attack and the defence of the team, ensuring that the team moves throughout the pitch as a compact unit.

There are various types of midfielders: some who create chances, some who control possession in the middle of the park, and then there are defensive midfielders who are responsible for anchoring the defence, which is also a pivotal role in football.

Midfielders in today's football are quite entertaining to watch, and in this list we will rank the top ten midfielders who are exciting to watch, not based upon their trophies or statistics but purely on the basis of their skills by which they can control a game and change it in a moment.

10. Bruno Guimaraes

At number ten, we have Newcastle's engine of the midfield, Bruno Guimaraes. In such a young age, the Brazilian has turned into a leader of the dressing room and is easily one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

As a midfielder, there is almost nothing that he cannot do; he can play as an anchor, a playmaker and even in a box-to-box role. His relentless energy and consistent performances make him very reliable.

Without his presence Newcastle United would've never made it to the Champions League. He not only creates chances for his team; he also scores goals in crucial moments, averaging five goals in a season.

The Brazilian has also cemented his spot in the national team, earning 33 caps so far, and will play a key role in the upcoming World Cup. His all-round abilities and versatility make him a feature in our list.

9. Fabian Ruiz

Fabian Ruiz is one of the most underrated midfielders in the world. The Spanish international has slowly crept up the ranks and cemented himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world.

He had created 28 chances for Paris Saint-Germain last season, the fifth most in the competition last year. Ruiz is exceptional in possession, game sense and ability to find space between the lines.

The 29-year-old was a key player in Spain’s Euro Cup success in 2024 and Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory. His leadership abilities also make him stand out from the rest of the midfielders in the world.

While the likes of Rodri lifted the Ballon d'Or for an incredible season, Ruiz has been consistently delivering for his teams but has always ended up being underrated and underappreciated.

8. Nicolo Barela

Nico Barella is one of the finest midfielders Italy has produced in this era. A warrior in midfield, he is one of the best midfielders operating in the classic number six role.

Last season, he had been a defensive warrior for Inter Milan with 254 interventions and 165 possession recoveries in the Serie A. Barella has been a sensation for a long time, and his consistency makes him phenomenal.

The 28-year-old is an engine; he presses relentlessly without stopping and also possesses incredible flair. He is brilliant on the ball and can dissect opposition defences with sharp passes vertically.

His vision and creativity, along with defensive awareness, make him one of the most versatile and exciting midfielders in the world.

7.  Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay may sound weird in this list, but he is easily one of the most exciting midfielders in the world right now.

The Scottish international had never discovered his full potential at Manchester United, but in his first season at Napoli he ended up lifting the club's first Scudetto since Diego Maradona had lifted it.

The Scottish international bagged 12 goals and 4 assists in the league; one of them was a title-deciding bicycle finish on the final matchday, and he also won the Serie A player of the season award in his debut season, and he

The 26-year-old is a hard-working box-to-box midfielder with incredible ability to exploit open spaces between opposition defences, and he times his runs extremely well.

He also scored a decisive bicycle goal in the World Cup qualifiers, which helped Scotland qualify for the big tournament this year.

6. Declan Rice

Declan Rice has been a revolutionary change in midfield for Arsenal. With a whoppering £105m price tag, the Englishman has justified every penny of that amount with his incredible performances.

His ability to anchor the defence and in possession has helped Arsenal finish as runners-up in the league twice in a row, and now they are currently on course to win the league.

Rice averages 2.5 xA (expected assists) from corners and set pieces, which is a key stat considering the number of goals the Gunners score from these situations.

The 26-year-old can also play in an advanced role and as a centre back, which makes him quite versatile as a player. He is a starter for England and will be one of the players to watch for the Three Lions.

5. Alexis Mac Allister

The Argentine has been one of the best signings of Liverpool in recent years and has completely transformed the Reds.

He was extremely influential in their league win last season and has also been crucial for the Argentine national team. Without him, it would've been quite difficult for Argentina to win the World Cup and the Copa America title in 2024.

Mac Allister recorded 346 duels in the Premier League last season, the second most amongst midfielders. On top of his key ball-winning capabilities, he is brilliant in possession and has a knack for scoring stellar goals.

He has quickly cemented himself as the heart of the Reds' and Argentine midfield, and that makes him feature in our list.

4. Federico Valverde

In terms of excitement, Federico Valverde just has to be there. The Uruguayan international is one of the most energetic midfielders in the world who plays the game with pure passion, and he just never stops running.

There isn't a single position where he cannot play, and he is a golden player for any manager in football. The 26-year-old has a rocket boot which he uses to score plenty of 'golazos'.

Valverde's versatility to play as a winger, full-back, number eight, and even as a number six makes him one of the most versatile players in the world.

His fierce mentality has also earned him Real Madrid’s captain's armband at the age of 26, which is a huge thing to achieve at such a young age. His hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League RO-16 is just an example of his stellar reputation.

3. Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong is a perfect example of ‘la pausa'. He can turn a defensive situation into an attack in a matter of seconds with his exceptional vision and ball carrying.

The Dutchman is press-resistant and can spin two to three players at a time while moving up the pitch to create chances. Barça can control the tempo of the game just because of the presence of De Jong in the team.

Although he has been troubled with injuries, the 28-year-old at his full fitness is a joy to watch. In possession, there are almost no midfielders in the world who are better than him; he finished last season with 88.5% successful passes, with 250 of them being forward passes.

He has cemented himself as the engine of Barcelona and the Dutch national team.

2. Vitinha

Similar to Frenkie de Jong, Vitinha is exceptional on the ball and press-resistant, and his technical abilities make him stand out from the rest.

He is the chief creator for Paris Saint-Germain and the Portuguese national team. He finished last season with 592 progressive passes in Ligue-1.

In the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal, Vitinha had 100% pass accuracy and not a single misplaced pass throughout ninety minutes.

His presence has elevated PSG by quite a level, as he can dictate the tempo of the game from deep, and you just cannot simply take the ball off him by pressing him. His football IQ and his vision make him rank second on our list.

1. Pedri

Pedri is the soul of Barcelona’s midfield at the age of 22. The youngster is a blend of Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who revolutionised football with their tiki-taka back under Pep Guardiola. Injuries have halted his career, but he has magic on his feet that can change the game in a matter of seconds.

He excels in every department, from making recoveries, controlling the tempo of the game and serving line-breaking passes.

Pedri played a key role in Barça’s treble-winning season last year with 250+ recoveries, which is the most in La Liga, and also created 70 chances, which is the third most in the league.

The 22-year-old has become more important to Hansi Flick's side than the likes of Lamine Yamal simply because of his ability to keep the ball glued to himself. He is press resistant and stretches the game across the pitch. His dribbling skills and knack for scoring goals make him the most exciting midfielder to watch in the world right now.
