Bayern Munich no. 9 Harry Kane has revealed that he aims to break Robert Lewandowski’s record of bagging 41 goals in a season after he netted a magnificent brace against rivals Borussia Dortmund in their 3-2 win on Saturday.
The Englishman has scored in the fourth consecutive game, taking his tally to 30 goals from just 24 games so far. He's just 11 goals away from equalling Lewandowski's record, which was previously held by Gerd Müller.
Kane converted a penalty against Dortmund to reach another milestone in the Bundesliga. He tied the record set by Paul Breitner of ten successful penalties back in 1980-81. The 32-year-old could break this record if he manages to convert another spot kick this season.
The Englishman has been in sensational form this season, scoring 45 goals across all competitions in just 37 appearances this season. On top of goals, he has also teamed up brilliantly with Michael Olise up top, making them one of the most lethal duos up front in the Bundesliga.
"There are still a lot of games to play,” said Kane when he was asked about the record. (sic)
He added, "I need to try and be consistent over that period. We'll see from late April, the start of May, if it's possible. But of course, right now it's just there and I just have to do what I do.” (sic)
The 32-year-old also reached the milestone of 500 career goals for club and country recently, which makes him one of the most efficient goal-scoring machines of this generation. When Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller's record from the 1971-72 season, he had scored in the dying minutes of the final matchday. At this stage of the season, the Poland international had scored just one goal more than Kane, which makes the Englishman's chances of reaching the milestone pretty realistic.
Following the win at Dortmund, Bayern Munich have moved 11 points above their rivals in the Bundesliga table, and it should be a comfortable path to another title. However, Harry Kane feels that the title race is still not over despite the massive gap between the teams.
"We had an 11-point lead a few weeks ago, and we saw how quickly it can change within two results, so we have to stay focused,” said Kane. (sic)
