German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger’s comments spark “racism” debate as Ivory Coast boss hits back

Bastian Schweinsteiger, a former Germany and Bayern Munich player, has found himself at the centre of a controversy after Ivory Coast manager Emerse Fae reacted to his comments about African football, labelling them racist and sparking a debate about the stereotypes surrounding African football.

During the pre-match analysis for the game between Ivory Coast and Germany, the 2014 World Cup winner described African football as "wild, unorthodox, and not as tactical as Europe", warning Germany to prepare for an unpredictable game.

"A bit of African football, a little unorthodox, a little wild, and possibly a little less tactically conditioned." Schweinsteiger stated, "We must be prepared for the unpredictable." (sic)

Although Germany narrowly defeated Ivory Coast, the Elephants also advanced to the knockout stages with a commanding 2-0 victory over debutants Curaçao. Following the game, Emerse Fae expressed his disappointment with the German legend's comments.

He slammed Schweinsteiger, claiming that his views on African football are influenced by long-held stereotypes about the continent's game.

"I think it's sad; Schweinsteiger was a very good player. I have always loved him as a midfielder and the way he understood football. When I heard his comments, I was disappointed in the man,” said Fae in the post-match interview. (sic)

He further added, "I don't agree with him, but I have no other solution other than to work with things as they are. All I can show is that on the pitch African teams are not just physical; we are technical and tactical. I can only hope it is a clumsy statement, rather than something going on in his mind. If that's what he thinks, he is free to do so.” (sic)

He also criticised Schweinsteiger, claiming that he said such things to gain media attention. Fae believes that such remarks are racist because they are based on stereotypes that paint African teams in a negative light as relying solely on physicality and chaos instead of tactical intelligence. The debate has spread quickly, with many pointing out the Germans' ignorance of African nations.
